On the Road Again - Take 3.3

Shorter drive and no time zone changes.

We woke late in Fort Stockton, stupid time zone change of two hours!
We left at 10:15 thinking we could drive into Fort Stockton and find a cafe...not!!! What a sad dead town, so disappointing. In looking back at our westward bound trip in December we had stopped for lunch in Fort Stockton.
This is Piasano Pete, the world's largest roadrunner.

In December he was dressed for the holidays.

This is actually the second jail built in Fort Stockton. It was completed in 1883 and enlarged in 1913. Numerous outlaws have been incarcerated here You can read about some of them here.

We got on the road and decided we'd have an early lunch since we never found breakfast. This part of the highway through Texas is very barren and there are at least one hundred miles between towns.

Ozana was our stop for lunch at Subway.

More same old dull highway.

We originally planned to stay away from San Antonio since we had spent two nights here in December. So we booked into New Braunfels. Our plan was to see some of the missions around San Antonio before checking in. However, once we reached SA and looked at the traffic and driving distances we opted to go to the hotel.
Finding our Hilton Garden Inn in New Braunfels was not an easy task. Even the GPS was stuck on the correct address.

Finally checked in, feet up and room service seems like a good idea!

  1. So let me get this straight, you're driving through all these small towns in Texas and rather than eat in a local diner or bar, you choose Subway? Would you do the same in Europe? Shame on you! :)

    1. We have been travelling since November from Toronto to Florida to LA to Mexico (2 months) and have sampled much local cuisine. Now on our eastbound trip LA to Myrtle Beach SC and then Toronto we sampled as much as possible.
However, in answer to your question Texas does not have many small towns on Highway 10 that would can "sample". Case in point Fort Stockton had NO local cafes not even for breakfast as mentioned. Since there are 100 miles between towns on this stretch one takes what one can. And in Texan towns that consists of mainly McDonald's, Burger King, Whataburger, Dairy Queen then sometimes Subway is the best choice.

Let me say that in Europe I am more than happy to sit at a sidewalk cafe and eat whatever there might be.
