July 2025 - Toronto ON
Corner of Yonge and Wellington
The first Bank of British North America building on this site – designed in 1845-46 by well-known Toronto architect John Howard – was ideally positioned between the import and wholesale activity of Front Street and the busy retail shops on King Street. It was part of the city’s first financial district and its Wellington Street neighbours included insurance companies and other banks.

In the late 1800s Toronto became Canada’s mercantile capital and experienced a building boom. Between 1871 and 1891 the number of factories in the city increased from over 500 to approximately 2,500. This heady prosperity may have prompted the bank to replace the Howard structure with a design in the hottest architectural style of the day: Second Empire. The new building by Toronto architect Henry Langley was completed in 1872-73.

Monday Mural
I'm linking up at Monday Mural
May 2025 - Ottawa ON
Found at the Canadian Museum of History.
The Hansen-Bruni Mural is a magnificent artistic mural depicting the growth of Canada. Designed by Thor Hansen – a textile artist of Danish origin – and painted by Umberto Bruni, the mural depicts the growth of Quebec in 65 square metres (700 square feet) and 42 colour motifs. From the Percé Rock to the Gaspé Cross, across the Montmorency Falls and the tops of all those steeples, this is a slice of history – immortalized.

Happy Goat Coffee Company

Construction began in October 2022 on the historic conservatory building, one of Toronto's oldest attractions. The Palm House, designed by City of Toronto architect Robert McCallum, opened in 1910 and is the third horticultural pavilion on site.
The Palm House features a wide array of palms, banana plants and other tall specimens. It showcases a variety of palm trees and other tropical plants like cycads, gingers, hibiscus and seasonal exotics.

Wednesday John's golf was rained out again (last week also). I did some decluttering in the middle room (2 pillows, decorative umbrella (I bought in California and did nothing with), glass battery candle - all went to T). We threw out 2 covers for headsets, and a couple of posters.
I only went to Longo's for some items on special and chicken quarters for dinner. I was going to make fish coconut lime soup if John had been golfing and the weather was better.
Effective today, a combination lock is installed on the entrance gate to the tennis court. This measure is being implemented due to repeated incidents of non-residents from neighbouring condominiums accessing and using the court without authorization.
John bottled his wine and then we went to St. Lawrence Market and picked up steaks, ground lamb, and some vegetables. I also picked up those sweet drops that I had mentioned a few weeks ago.
Some interesting fish options.Friday John golfed at Remington. I went to the Reference Library to see their display of old Toronto postcards.

The Bee Sting is such a good long read, after a string of DNFs. I was immediately absorbed by this extraordinary story about the derailing of a once prosperous Irish family.
