February 2014 - Mazatlan Mexico

Bear with me there are going to be a lot of photos of the Cathedral Basilica de la Immaculada Concepcion.

BTW the sky is always this blue!!!

Also can you hear John sigh and roll his eyes whining saying but we've already been inside before!

Click here for some photos of a wedding we caught last month at the cathedral.

We'll start outside across the street from the Town Hall Square, Plaza Republica. This is an oasis surrounded by buses, cabs, pulmonias, beggars, bikers and food carts. Do not assume that any of them are going to stop for you as you cross to the church!!

The church has a souvenir stand outside the doors.

The plaque on the church describes it as:
Located on Republic Square, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception became the port's second Catholic church.  Its construction was begun on May 7th, 1875 and completed
on May 7, 1899. Father Miguel Lacarra oversaw a crew of master builders that included bricklayer Estansilao Leon, carpenter Santiago Leon and ironworker Isaac Leon. Generally
speaking, this church is eclectic in style with a predominance of Neo-Gothic elements.

In 1958, it was named as the seat of Mazatlan's diocese as well as a basilica cathedral.

The Cathedral Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción is the world’s only Roman Catholic Church with the Star of David displayed in each of its 28 stained-glass windows.

  1. What a fabulous church!
The architecture is quite interesting - at once looking back and looking ahead. For some reason he can't name, it reminded «Louis» of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, though it really doesn't resemble Sagrada Familia...

«Louis» posted historic First Presbyterian, Napa, CA.

  3. Good grief (English understatement). What an incredible place - literally awe-inspiring. And I'm glad to see there's a souvenir stall nearby!
