31 Days in Canada

In honour of CANADA DAY I plan to post a daily image of Canada and a link to a random Canadian location we have visited.

Vikings arrived in Newfoundland around 1,000 AD, roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. The Norse explorers, likely led by Leif Erikson, established a base camp at L’Anse aux Meadows on the Great Northern Peninsula. It remains the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America.

The mainland region of Labrador, Canada (known locally as "The Big Land") is one of the last untouched frontiers on earth.

Basque Whaling Station: During the 16th century, over 2,500 Basque whalers traveled annually to Red Bay, Labrador

.Industrial Oil Production: They produced thousands of barrels of whale oil to light up European lamps, serving as North America's first major export industry.

Underwater Treasures: The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting 500-year-old sunken whaling ships, including the famed San Juan galleon.

Little Canada

We had an invite from our financial advisor's group to attend a private showing of Little Canada and a lunch. This was a well timed initiative as Canadians band together in light of the current political situation.

We had been here in 2021 when Little Canada first opened. So I will not repeat those areas, Little Toronto, Petit Quebec, Golden Horseshoe, Niagara and Niagara on the Lake, and Ottawa.

Little West Coast and East Coast have now been added and some new additions made to Toronto.

Little North and Little Rockies are also in the works for this year.

They also have a scavenger hunt, the mission is to find three moose in each destination.

The kids enjoy it, but it is the adults who really get animated as they recognize spots they have visited in Canada. We are lucky that we have seen most of these destination IRL.

We haven't been to Ottawa in decades but we will be going there in May!

LITTLE WEST COAST

Little West Coast, the seventh destination in Little Canada’s growing repertoire, is an 800-square-foot tribute to the natural and cultural treasures of Canada’s westernmost regions. In contrast to Little East Coast, unveiled just last year, the West Coast exhibit brings to life a diverse range of environments, from the Okanagan Valley’s desert landscapes to the lush rainforests that define Vancouver’s surrounding areas. This destination offers a unique glimpse of British Columbia, featuring iconic landmarks like Vancouver’s Gastown and Stanley Park and Vancouver Island’s Tofino and Victoria.

The creation of Little West Coast was no small feat. It took the collective effort of 30 artisans and over 25,000 hours to bring this destination to life. The attention to detail is staggering: the team painstakingly hand-painted 3D-printed boats, crafted approximately 8,000 miniature trees, and introduced a variety of animations never before seen at Little Canada. A particular highlight is the rolling fog in the mountains of Rogers Pass, a technological marvel that brings an extra layer of realism to the display.

Rogers Pass is a significant part of the Trans-Canada Highway and a National Historic Site of Canada, commemorating the connection of Canada by rail and road.
