Monday Mural

I'm linking up at Monday Mural hosted by Oakland Daily Photo.

November 2015 - Toronto ON

Jamii spearheaded (July 2014) a painting on an Esplanade basketball court after the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment paid to resurface the court, which had been destroyed during a drug arrest last year. Jamii — a not-for-profit organization formed to bring vitality to The Esplanade — decided to use the surface for a mural that illustrates the neighbourhood’s values. Jamii, which means community in Swahili, wanted to turn a negative into a positive.

That the police from 51 Division were openly involved in both fixing the court and then prepping the wall for the mural also helped cast them in a new light for some members of the community.

There are some photos along the side, this one with some kids enjoying some basketball on the court.

On the other side.

  1. The murals are beautiful! The Police did a good job getting involved, hopefully the community will trust them more, and hopefully they will also take good care of the newly refurbished basketball court!
