Hot Black Coffee

September 2021 - Toronto ON

Queen St. West Toronto

Our usual at home weekend after a busy week.  The week was also quiet, John golfed at Turtle Creek and his usual Wednesday game.

He took a friend to physio and captured this pigeon hitchhiking a ride. The pigeon even got in low as the car turned the corner and then settled down for the trip.

September's weather has been perfect with great sunsets. They are even forecasting temperatures feeling like 35 C next week.

We ran some errands and received a scotch order from Whisky Drop. We also mailed our federal election ballot.

Thursday I bought tickets to Little Canada at Dundas Square.

Little Canada is a celebration of all things Canada. It’s a unique journey of discovery through the sights and sounds of our great country in miniature scale.

It’s a highly detailed miniature world featuring destinations such as Little Niagara, Little Toronto, Petit Québec and Ottawa.

We started in Niagara.

The wineries.

Then moved on to our next destinations.

Toronto

John's video of Stratford and Kitchener.

Ottawa

Quebec

Promo video.

How much did we enjoy it? We bought an annual pass as we were leaving so we can come back and see all the details we missed.

To round out the experience, visitors can head to the Little Bites Café and enjoy some quintessentially Canadian food and beverages.

Friday we went to St. Lawrence Market as John wanted to cook a tomahawk steak.

John and his son were skyping on the weekend and his son mentioned a whisky he wanted to try but couldn't find it. I did find it online as they were talking but it had no availability. Later in the week I was trying to remember the name and found it in my history AND there was availability in one store in Ontario! Deciding it was best to order it immediately online I ordered two. It came today and oh it is soooo good! Way too smooth.

COOKING

Saturday stuffed green peppers, it's been ages and I had bought local peppers at the market last week.

Sunday BBQ chicken legs, new potatoes also from the market and cabbage with onions.

Monday pork chops beans and new potatoes.

Tuesday beef short ribs and lamb kidney stew.

Wednesday haddock tacos - baked the haddock with olive oil, lime juice, cumin, paprika and chili. I made a slaw of sour cream, siracha, lime juice, honey, cilantro, red onion, jalapeno.

Thursday sticky pork belly bites with baby bok choy and bean sprouts.

Friday tomahawk steak ✅ baby bok choy tomatoes bean sprouts and onions.
Of course the fire alarm had to go just as we were plating dinner. It turned out to be a false alarm, as usual, thankfully.

Friend gave me some cherry tomatoes.

Air fryer at 400 F for 13 minutes each side, internal temperature medium rare 145 F. PERFECT!

Paired with a wine we bought when we were away for the weekend.

Did I say it was good??? I woke up this morning and said to John let's have steak and eggs for breakfast OMG it was like butter! BTW neither of us have ever had steak and eggs ✅!!

WATCHING
Finished Fauda.

On my laptop - Service Included, entertaining, quick read but she focuses a little too much on her own personal life.

Tried a few non-finishers. Finished Scarborough. It is now a movie premiering at TIFF this year. Toronto Life magazine also ran an article about the book and movie today.

  1. I love the look of that tomahawk steak! Doug had a pat of butter on a ribeye when we were camping. Can't believe you started watching Manifest, we are picking it uptoday from the library. What a coincidence.

  2. I am surprised a pigeon would do that.

  3. Wine with a cork! Now that's posh. Peanut butter whisky? I'd have to try it I guess, but it is hard to imagine.

  7. I'm glad you have been enjoying the weather. It was crazy-warm in Chicago yesterday, headed up into the 90s F. I did not need the coat I brought.

I would love to visit Little Canada. I can see why you bought an annual subscription. Thank you for sharing the photos and the videos.

I bet you'll be back for more of those steaks. It sounds fantastic.

I've had a few non-finishers here, too. Fortunately I packed two good books for the plane, and I'm almost finished with both of them.

  8. Love the miniatures! We've held off buying an air fryer so far, but the ease of making those beautiful steaks and in a short time . . . well, we might have to break down this winter. LOL.
