This Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque can be found on the outside wall, near the northwestern corner of Hart House, off Tower Road on the University of Toronto grounds. Here's what it says:
Graham was instrumental in establishing physiotherapy in Canada. Trained in massage and remedial gymnastics, she rehabilitated soldiers wounded in the First World War and taught at the Military School of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physiotherapy, here at Hart House. In 1929, she helped create a diploma program at the University of Toronto. Her advocacy ensured that accredited physiotherapists served as officers in the military and at convalescent hospitals during the Second World War. The Enid Graham Memorial Lecture pays tribute to this founding member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
I love these daily glimpses of Canada and the stories behind the places and people you highlight. Enid Graham’s contribution is especially inspiring, as her work helped shape physiotherapy in Canada and supported so many people through difficult times. It’s wonderful how historic plaques can bring forgotten stories back into the light and remind us of the people who helped build a country. Looking forward to seeing more of these Canadian discoveries.
ReplyDeleteDo have people in same-sex-marriages the same rights as everybody else? Here they do not. A shame.
ReplyDeleteMy friend has two kids (her partner is the biological Mom) and if they married, only her partner would have all rights (and money) - so they do not bother to marry. Sad. But they are happy anyways. Just wonder what happens if her partner.... I don´t even want to think about that!
Yes, Canada has full legal equality and marriage rights for same-sex couples, backed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalized in 1969, and nationwide marriage equality was established via the Civil Marriage Act on July 20, 2005.
