Market Fresh

Saturday

Six Word Saturday Is it a mirage or circus?

We had been told about a new restaurant, a five minute walk from here. So we headed out, found a place, although I knew it wasn't the right place as I had seen photos. El Seis, coffee was great, service good, but cooking was ridiculously slow considering we were the only people who ordered a cooked breakfast.

When it came, it was lukewarm and my eggs in my huevos montados (riding eggs) were hard!

The basic dish consists of fried eggs served upon lightly fried or charred corn or flour tortillas topped with a salsa fresca made of tomatoes, Chili peppers, onion, and cilantro. Refried beans, Mexican-style rice, and slices of avocado or guacamole are common accompaniments, with cilantro as a garnish.
The only accompaniments were the refried beans.

John had chilaquiles (Spanish pronunciation: [tʃilaˈkiles]) from the Nahuatl word chīlāquilitl is a traditional Mexican dish which John has eaten in other places.

Corn tortillas lightly fried are the basis of the dish. John asked for the green  salsa and pulled chicken was added to the mix. It was garnished with crema, crumbled queso fresco and pickled onion.

When we left we found our original destination a few doors away but the sign is practically invisible and who would have expected two restaurants in the same tiny mall? In the picture above, with John, the other restaurant is across from the gazebo.

Hopped on the bus and got off at Valentino's and look! No one in front of the sign!

It's a short walk on Av. Rafael Buelna to Soriana's for groceries.

John took this in the bakery section.

Then a $120 peso taxi ride with a delightful elderly driver who spoke great English and was happy to practice.

Finally a great day for some pool time.

Another football Sunday.

Strawberries (fresh from Mexico), pineapple, and bananas made up this morning's fruit salad and green juice, a big favourite of mine, John, not so much.

We headed to the pool around 10:30, got a palapa and enjoyed.
John snapped me under the first palapa.

John caught this "beauty" at the pool.

John then left to watch football and I stayed and had lunch, a BLT.

The moon.

We didn't plan on more pool time but I headed down and grabbed a palapa, better view than yesterday. John joined me after his workout.

These vendors are resort approved and have been here for years, nobody even bothers bargaining with them.

Lunch under the palapa, classic nachos for John and shrimp cocktail for me.

John, getting new sunglasses from Jesus, he's been selling here for twenty five years. Two days later, Jesus left his "office" and walked over to say hi... $500 pesos and John has another pair of sunglasses and a black belt. No flies on these guys!

Great photo, begs a caption.

We decided (and it looked a little overcast) to head into town.
As usual, we got off at the market.
Entertaining themselves.

HUGE!

There is a cruise ship, Ruby Princess, in town and it carries 3,200 people so it is busy in town.

Lunch at Chelio's on the Malecon. John had the nachos with chorizo.

My shrimp diabla, shrimps were great sauce was average and not spicy at all.

This building has an historic plaque on it, but it is fenced off and in bad condition but recently painted.

Yellow parking entrance to Freeman hotel and red sign is Angelina's commenting maybe we should give it another try. You can read about the historic building the restaurant is housed in here.

It is pretty.

We don't often approach from this angle. The Art Museum is on the right and Tippy Toes is at the end of the street.

Car wash next to Tippy Toes.

John looked through the window of an abandoned building and saw this.

We never get tired of wandering and admiring the pretty streets and houses.

Guess it was laundry day.

Breakfast restaurant we want to try.

Another breakfast place on the list. Flowers above are across the street.

Back at the market and we get two rib eye steaks, he is just cutting them $108 pesos. They were pretty good especially at that price!

Wednesday
ABC Wednesday Letter C

Another beach palapa day.

For sale.

Lunch guacamole, cranberry walnut, orange pineapple salad.

Lots of reading getting done.

We made the effort to go down and see the sunset, the building beside us blocks it at this time of year. El Sol didn't make as much of an effort. Another night.

Look left...

Look right...

Some things are just not meant to be...We walked over to that restaurant mentioned above (last Saturday) for breakfast. Their sign had said open at 8:30. I know it did, as I commented on that being early for Mexico. Behold, this morning it said 1 PM!

Oh well, on the bus to do groceries and I say, why don't we go downtown for breakfast at that cute new Mexican place (in photo on Tuesday)? Perfect.

On the way.

El Portal de San Juan. Definitely a keeper.

Not only pretty the food was delicious and inexpensive.

Delicious coffee de olla (Americano was a cup of hot water and a jar of Nescafe), the best ever we have had. Complimentary starter was a corn tortilla with ??.

The kitchen is just an average house kitchen.

My huevo rancheros.

John's scrambled with ham. Fast service and hot food.

We took a roundabout way back to the bus. Across the street from the restaurant.

Let's pop into the Art Museum (it's free) and see what is on.

Oh, let's go into Etnika, a t-shirt for each of us. Pretty stuff.

Hop on the bus and we went to Soriana for groceries and then "home".

The sun is still not up to its full potential.

There were four fishermen out on the strand in front of us.

Another pool day although John did work out and took a good walk along the beach. I only went a little way, the sand was too soft making it hard work.

I made wraps for lunch by the pool.

A fruit seller.

A decent sunset.

Chili for dinner.

BOOKS

Another twitter funny from the library.

Some good reads this week, especially for pool reading.

The Good Liar of the three women who is the best liar????

The Girl I Used to Be was also a quick compelling read.

The Winters is a retelling/rehashing of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, but lacked the tension and suspense. Left me shaking my head wondering why I bothered.

Gone Without a Trace now this I really enjoyed, quite the thriller.

After this week's reading I am aware of what a person needs to do to disappear!!

All Things Consoled by Canadian Elizabeth Hay is a wonderful read. It's no wonder it won the ScotiaBank Giller prize, leaving me to want to read more of her.

What Was Lost,  a good read, but parts made me think I had read something like it before. Maybe a movie????

  2. Soooo, thanks to you I'm craving either nachos or shrimp -- or maybe both! I'll take any of those sunsets. Looks like you're having great weather, even if breakfast is turning out to be a challenge! Love the people with the fans. And ALL THE FLOWERS!

  3. Oh meant to say, I liked the Winters, even though it didn't make to my favorites of the year list. The Girl I Used to Be was worth the read. I might have a copy of Gone Without a Trace ... I'll have to check.

    1. First things first...I had to count the photos to find that the hot dude was John!! He'll be pleased with that compliment.

How hot? Not as hot as you are getting. Ha Ha just realized how funny this is in context of above sentence.

Temps during the day around 27 C but no humidity and it can be quite windy along the ocean recently.
