I converted a classic.

Happy Birthday!

Today would have been my mother's and her mother's birthdays. 
Mom would have been 86 (died 1989) and Nanny 110 (died 1972)!!!
These photos were taken in Montreal around 1967.

My sister Ursula is no longer with us either so I hope they are all sharing this day together.

Since I couldn't come up with any photos that had a mirror in them, I decided to go with adults dressing up.

This was a Halloween party I hosted in Montreal around 1974 or 1975.
That is my sister on the far left (cave woman) and my mother smoking the cigar in the bottom row.

My sister had brought her relatively new boyfriend, Tim to this party. Tim and I are recently back in touch and share memories of my sister. They didn't go out a long time but she was probably his first love and has very fond thoughts of her.

I shared this photo with Tim and he sent me his heart-felt memories of that evening.
I remember that night & party at your place very well. It sure was cool wearing that flimsy "Fred Flintstone" outfit. Urs and I spent that day at your folks making the outfits ourselves. I must have definitely been in love with your sister for her to convince me to wear that costume!! We did have a good laugh en route when we had to stop for gas looking like that!! We made a prior stop at my house in Beaconsfield to allow me the chance to introduce Urs to my parents for the first time (it was 1 of our first dates). I remember that she was so shy & embarrassed to meet my parents wearing her Wilma outfit.

Summer 1990 - Montreal Quebec


My cousin's baby shower. That is my maternal grandfather, click here to see him in 1930, some sixty years later, surrounded by some of his great grandchildren. My cousins' children, O'Shea and Swift.

Grandfather was Tom Swift, born in 1904 in Dublin Ireland. he appears on the 1911 census.

I found them in 1912 living in the same house. This is an image of the original 1908-1915 electoral rolls from the Dublin City Archives.

Interesting that his father's name is spelt (UK) or spelled (US) as Swifte. It shows that they lived in a house and shop.

Today it is a funeral house but it is easy to imagine how it would have looked in 1912. It is the small white building in the middle.

The topic photo immediately brought this photo to mind.

These are my maternal great grandparents Catherine and William Brennan.

This is a copy of the 1911 census so I am guessing that this photo was taken in 1911 or 1912.



The children are Mary V, my grandmother who was always called Veronica or Vonnie. And my grand uncle Alex.
They would add to the family, William, known as Billy B and Catherine known as Kate.

I'm going with my maternal great-grandfather's hair and mustache. My grandmother, standing in front, was born in 1907 so this appears to be around 1912?

December 1957 - Montreal QC


Last week I posted an early morning photo of us opening gifts.


This was all the family we had in Canada and my uncle had invited two Irish friends who didn't have any family either.

December 1957 - Montreal QC

This was our first Christmas in Canada. Dad had arrived in July and Mom, my sister and I came in September. We were staying with my aunt and uncle who had come over from Dublin in June.

My aunt and uncle had a rented apartment on Durocher St.

Next week I am posting a photo of the same day, later in the evening when we had some guests over.

Christmas morning - Aunty Nell in green and my sister and I opening gifts. It looks like we were spoiled as usual.
From what I can see we each received cribs for our dolls, I have a doll in the background and a stroller. Ursula got the toy piano.
I wonder what Ursula is looking at???

I love Aunty Nell's dress!

254 : Couples, clinches, crossings, hitching a ride

My parents were extremely in love their entire lives. They were always affectionate with each other.

These two photos are Christmas 1958 in Baie Comeau Quebec. 
Most of their friends were young couples, from Australia, Ireland, England and Scotland. They had come to Canada and then found jobs at the Canadian British Aluminum company. 

Dad is in the grey vest and Mom has the rust coloured dress.
