You can just imagine how this church must have been the center of the community for both secular and sacred activities. Seems to follow the traditions of building these grand cathedrals to remind the people of the power and authority of the church.
Or maybe I'm just thinking along those lines after reading Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth" and watching the mini series. :-)
