NorthwesTel's main office parking lot is the beneficiary of this grand piece. This is one of 5 murals painted by Lance Burton and a crew of 10 talented young assistants from the Youth of Today Society in 1998.
It depicts miners doing the arduous climb over the mountains in the quest for gold..

December 2023 - Toronto ON

FCP King St. W Toronto

We stopped into the Royal York Hotel to see their gingerbread display, it was a little different from last year.

Looking down into the hotel lobby.

John and I in sync again!

Got my Christmas gift!

Brookfield Place - heading for a haircut.

Commerce Court.

I was in Longo's and saw three men with three grocery carts, they looked like tourists, probably staying in an Airbnb, it sounded like they were speaking Italian. Of course, when I get to the only open cashier, they were in front of me! As I cursed under my breath and the line grew behind me, but then, one of the men turns to me and asks if I have a loyalty card! I do and had my card ready.
Look at how much they spent!

My bus driver gifted me more spices!

John bought me a new headset, wireless. Not my photo.

Friday the temperature reached 11 C or 52 F! Crazy with great sunshine!!

COOKING

I found a recipe for rugelach, Rugelach is a filled baked confection originating in the Jewish communities of Poland. It is popular in Israel, commonly found in most cafes and bakeries.
I need to work on my triangles or else I will make them as a log. I filled half with cinnamon, currants and walnuts, the rest I made with marmalade and chocolate chips. We both preferred the cinnamon. I posted the recipe here, with other filling options.

Saturday ham (new Costco purchase), au gratin potatoes, mushy peas and turnips.

Sunday pork belly, roasted potatoes, mushy peas. We are still working on using up what we have, getting there!

Monday chicken tenders, Caesar salad and dips. The last of the chicken!!!!!

Tuesday hamburger stew - the last package of ground beef!!!!!!

Wednesday burgers

Thursday salt and vinegar chips halibut and broccolini. I will never do breaded fish any other way, this was fantastic. Simply coat fish with mayo (or do egg and milk) and coat fish in the crushed potato chips.

Friday steak frites

WATCHING
I found Australian Dessert Masters 2023 online so I watched it all! I also started watching season 15 of MasterChef Australia.

A Christmas Story recommended by a friend, and we enjoyed it.

Leave the World Behind is a 2023 American apocalyptic psychological thriller film. The film stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, and Kevin Bacon as they attempt to make sense of the gradual breakdown in phones, television, and other regularly used technology which points to a potential cataclysm. We enjoyed it.

How It Ends is a 2018 American action thriller.

Finally The Miracle Club 2023 is on Netflix! I have been waiting for this. It was cute, we enjoyed it. There's just one dream for the women of Ballygar to taste freedom: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes. The cast Maggie Smith, Laura Linney and Kathy Bates.
1967 and this was my Nanny Mac, she loved going on bus trips from Dublin to Lourdes where she could pray for all our pagan souls and buys us miraculous medals!!

Barbie meh, waste of money.

Fisk is an Australian comedy television series. Fast-paced comedy about high-end contracts lawyer Helen Tudor-Fisk, who is forced to take a job at a shabby, suburban law firm following a humiliating marriage breakdown and a professional fall from grace.

Next of Kin started off with me thinking, meh this is the story line?? Only to be completed blindsided with what came next. Great legal thriller. Love this new author!

My Recipe Box - Rugelach

This recipe is from the cookbook Gluten Free Baking for the Holidays. I made these after flipping through the book.
Pronounced roo·guh·laak

My first attempt, not very pretty! But delicious, we preferred the cinnamon currant filling. The marmalade was too much.

2 cups (280 g) gluten free flour - I use Cup4Cup
Pinch of salt

1 cup (225 g) cream cheese cool but not cold, cut into cubes
1 cup (225 g) butter cool but not cold, cut into cubes
2 Tbsp sugar
Vanilla - optional

Tapioca flour for dusting

Preheat the oven to 375Âș F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, add dry ingredients and whisk to blend.
In a small bowl, add cream cheese, butter, and sugar. Mix well with an electric mixer.
Add dry ingredients and beat until dough becomes a lump. By this time, your mixer will be working hard.
Gather the dough and bring it together into a cohesive mass. Divide the dough and shape each half into a disk. Use immediately or wrap each disk tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to three days or refrigerate for six months. If using right away, put other disk into the fridge.

Sprinkle rolling surface and rolling pin with tapioca flour. Roll the dough into a 12 inch circle.

Use a pastry cutter (or pizza knife) to cut into triangles.

You could also roll into a rectangle, sprinkle half the filling and then roll into a log, refrigerate until firm, then slice and bake. Repeat with second disk.

Brush with egg wash. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.

Throwback Thursday

December 2016 - St. Augustine FL

Flagler College is a private four-year liberal arts college. It was founded in 1968 and offers 29 majors and 34 minors.

.

Founded in 1968, the school is located on 19 acres (77,000 m2), the centerpiece of which is the Ponce de LeĂłn Hotel.

.

The Ponce de Leon Hotel was an exclusive hotel built by millionaire developer and Standard Oil co-founder Henry M. Flagler and completed in 1888. The Hotel Ponce de Leon was designed in the Spanish Renaissance style by the New York architects John CarrĂšre and Thomas Hastings. The hotel was the first of its kind constructed entirely of poured concrete using the local coquina stone as aggregate.

.

The hotel also was wired for electricity at the onset, with the power being supplied by D.C. generators supplied by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. When electricity was first put in Henry M. Flagler hired staff to turn power on and off for his residents, because the people staying at the hotel were too afraid to turn the switches on and off.

.

Interior elements of the hotel are credited to Louis Comfort Tiffany, with Pottier and Stymus responsible for the furnishings. Murals in the rotunda and dining room were completed by the well-known artist George W. Maynard, who a decade later did murals in the Treasures Gallery at the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. Noted Italian artist Virgilio Tojetti prepared the ceiling murals in the Grand Parlor.

I had to check out the ladies' room, it had a fireplace!
