Day 6

Departure 8:15
Weather 4C cold and overcast and never really got any warmer, even dropping to 0C
Arrival 4 PM we gained an hour
States  Texas New Mexico

We chose to have breakfast at the Hilton. In the past we would get complimentary breakfast as Gold members, however, they have gone to a cash credit system giving various dollar credits to be used in the hotel. See St. Louis, Here we got a $20 room credit which had been applied to our dinner last night.

We've driven this stretch before.

The name was taken from Tucumcari Mountain, which is situated near the community. Where the mountain got its name is uncertain. It may have come from the Comanche word "tukamukaru", which means to lie in wait for someone or something to approach. A 1777 burial record mentions a Comanche woman and her child captured in a battle at Cuchuncari, which is believed to be an early version of the name Tucumcari.

Tucumcari still had a lot of the old Route 66 motel signs.

It was a dark and gloomy morning so most of these were taken from the car.

While much has changed in Tucumcari, Del’s, and its iconic Hereford-bull-topped neon sign, has remained a constant, and a must-stop along Historic Route 66. It opened in 1956!

We did eat here once.

Empty deserted buildings are common in these small towns.

The above links show a prettier picture of this.

The link below for Moriarty NM explains the Whiting Brothers history.

What a shame! There is a better photo of it in the links above.

They now have a lot of murals. But since I have never posted them on Monday Mural you will have to check back!

Click here to visit Santa Rosa, we had stayed here in 2013.

A sign of the times.

Do you know what this is? A blade for a wind turbine.

All of a sudden we had to pull into the right lane, the road was covered in debris. That transport on the far right had a mangled grill on the front where he had fit the pickup truck.

What!?!?

YUM! We first ate this on our trip to the Grand Canyon in 1998 in Cameron.

Checking was very slow, only 1 clerk. I sometime do the app check-in but in these same places I prefer IRL check-in so that I get my water and ensure that I get my credits. As well I get the hours of operation for the restaurant.

There was a Navajo wedding taking place, lots of kids running around.

Dinner was awful, well, mine was. John enjoyed his steak, I ordered the steak sandwich and sent it back. It was pre-packaged frozen dry roast beef slices. I got the steak instead.

  1. How vast lands and abandoned buildings in small towns sad. I think these places are famous for beef steaks so good choice. Thank you for another trip!!

  2. We used to stay at Kiva when it had an RV park and the liver and onions at Del's is the best.
