Self-Isolation Week 4

April 2020 - Toronto ON

And so it goes on. Luckily, we are not the kind to get bored.

Self-isolation

Our neighbourhood, Humber Bay, attracts many people on the weekends. But none of us expected the hordes that showed up last weekend.

Sunday was a gorgeous day and people from everywhere in the city came and parked, then proceeded to walk, chat, play ball, socialize etc. It angered residents so much that calls were made to the city, mayor, councillors which then prompted

Photo from Twitter.

All that complaining paid off on Monday morning.

Tuesday was John's birthday. Here he is making cookies.

Such excitement on Friday! We went to pick up a  package at the post office, then to get some fruit and vegetables and then to a new-to-us gluten free bakery on the other side of town. So we took a leisurely drive along the quiet streets and I even managed some photos!!!!

King St. West, the heart of the Financial District, totally deserted on Friday at lunch hour.

Union Station, York and Front St. is never quiet!!

I finished off a blanket that has been sitting in my basket since forever! I started a blue one.

WATCHING

I watched a limited series Unorthodox, the series is loosely based on Deborah Feldman's 2012 autobiography Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. It is the first Netflix series to be primarily in Yiddish.

I then watched the Making of Unorthodox.

Then I found Shtisel, an Israeli television drama series about a fictional Jewish family living in Geula, Jerusalem. Shira Hass, who starred in Unorthodox plays a young daughter in the series.

John is watching The Man in High Castle.

We watched a limited BBC series Collateral.

COOKING

Lamb shepherd's pie with mashed carrots and potatoes. John had picked up this seasoned lamb at Costco. It was okay but it wasn't as seasoned as one would expect.

Roast beef and potatoes, mashed turnips and carrots, cauliflower.

Leftover roast beef sandwiches with peppers, onions and cheese

Slow cooker spicy Asian beef short ribs I removed them from the slow cooker and put them into the oven for two hours. Served with rice and cauliflower.

Salmon and salad. In an effort to use up some salad items.

Pork with mashed potatoes and cabbage.

John had ordered for curb side pick up from a new gluten free bakery, Gemaro on Main St. John really liked their sandwich bread. He also got two foccacia, bagels and hamburger buns, and they threw in a hot cross bun.

Everything was fresh from this bakery. Since we had the foccacia, we made pizza for dinner.

We baked cowboy cookies and a mango tea cake. The tea cake was an interesting recipe, it said it made two loaves, I only got one out of it. It is a very light and fluffy cake.

Beef soup from our bag of bones and vegetables.

  1. Yay on getting some photos. I'm used to working from home, but this being totally cooped up is hard. Arghhh. Good job on the knitting. I'm going mark those one-bowl lemon brownies for later. I don't have yogurt in the house and we're not planning a shopping trip for a few more days,. Happy late birthday to John.

  2. It sounds like you are weathering things well overall. Your pizza looks incredible. I also want to try those lemon brownies--yum! ;-)

  3. The street art you photographed is really nice. Your meals look very good despite the lack of total choice in markets these days. Everyone is missing at least one or two ingredients that they would normally expect to have on hand, but urban North America including you & us still seems to be well provided.

  4. I am enjoying all the different things you can find to do online, like the virtual tour of Rome.

  5. Happy (belated) birthday to John!!

So glad City is cranking down on crowds. I'm usually out and about A LOT but have only been going out for groceries (we have enough for weeks now) and I had a doctor's appointment on Friday ... the streetcars and subway were eerily empty (which was good). Other than that, I'm staying inside ... watching lots and lots of movies and knitting lots and lots of slippers.

  6. We went for a walk at the Cape Cod Canal last week and it made me nervous how crowded it was along the walkway. We probably won't be going again and will just stick to the neighborhood walks from now on. It's amazing to see the photos of city streets so deserted!
Have you tried making the lemon brownies with gluten-free flour or does the recipe only work with regular?

  7. That is disappointing about the hoards descending at the weekend. It is not happening here anymore but around our Botanic Gardens is a running and walking track called The Tan. It is so busy and crowded and I expect it may be closed soon, although over the last few days the weather has cooled and perhaps it is not so busy.

  8. Ugh. I wish people would listen and stay home. That crowded beach is so sad! With so much contrary information, that's crossing the line from stupidity to ignorance. Stay safe, and take care of you and yours!

  9. What drove those people all to come to your neighborhood on Sunday? Freaky! The not so funny thing is how they all chose the same place to break the rules! Am glad the complaints had the right effect! Yes, isn't it strange, some places where you don't expect it from, keep their clientele, and others sadly not. Question, since your hubby also keeps a diet: mine can't eat eggs. Do you have any idea what it is in eggs, the white or the yellow yolks that is the culprit? Am itching to bake something, but any cake or dessert has eggs in it. Am surprised, no reference to the secret of my post yet. The lemon brownies sound delicious! That goes in my recipe file! Love your crochet(?) work? I am working on a pair of socks, knitting top down! Many thanks for sharing your week with All Seasons. Indeed, you don't show any sign of boredom. Have a creative week, Jackie!

    1. Jesh, there are many recipes that don't use eggs, there are also many substitutions for eggs in recipes. I'll send you an email with some info.
We are right on Lake Ontario with many walking trails along the lake so it is always a very popular area on weekends.

  10. I can't understand how people can do that. I would be so afraid. After investing a month in isolation for my own safety and that of others in my community it would be unthinkable. - Margy

  11. I feel frustrated with the world right now. What are these people congregating together thinking? I feel frustrated with many people who are not thinking about others, and I'm frustrated with our leadership. We could be so much better.

Please keep sharing any pictures you take (or even old photos) and I love the virtual tours, too. The recipes are also helpful.

    Take care and stay safe.

  12. I LOVE the Frank Zappa quote and all the links here. I started re-watching all of Mad Men. It's a shame that we have to legislate and police the stay at home orders.

  13. You are so right- I have no idea what day it is and everyday just blurrs! I watched Shtisel last year and Unorthodox last week. I iked Shtisel better although both were good. Thanks for posting the trailer for how they made it..
