Silver Fork

January 2020 - Toronto ON

The English language expression silver spoon is synonymous with wealth, especially inherited wealth; someone born into a wealthy family is said to have "been born with a silver spoon in their mouth".

Another quiet week for us, but it is the end of the holiday season and new and exciting things are coming up in the city.

Sunday I roasted the chicken I had bought, it had looked weird in the package and weirder when I took it out. Turns out it was half a chicken, but the biggest meatiest one I have ever seen. It was full of flavour.

Monday was leftover chicken.

Tuesday we met family for lunch at Lena's. No food photos but between the four of us we covered some of the menu.

I tried the stracciatella and it was very good, although I doubt I would order it.

STRACCIATELLA BURRATA
house-pulled mozzarella, cherry gastrique, pickled treviso, grilled bread
TUNA TARTARE
lime, coconut, jalapeño, cilantro, pickled red onion, taro chips
John and I shared the Caesar, John thought it was too heavy on the anchovy.
LEÑA CAESAR
baby romaine, kale, croutons, spanish bacon, parmigiano-reggiano, anchovy vinaigrette
John was not impressed with his omelette, it states a potato tortilla, but the potatoes with chopped on top.
CHORIZO OMELETTE
paprika & pork sausage, chickpeas, potato tortilla, leeks
SEARED CALAMARI
baby potatoes, charred tomatillo, arugula, kale, green tomato
Salmon was excellent, but the cream was not very garlicky.
ATLANTIC SALMON
braised escarole, roasted garlic cream, celery root
Dinner was salad.

On our way to lunch on Tuesday we had some time to kill so we stopped by City Hall. They were getting the ice ready for the Maple Leafs to do a public practice for the public.

Practice took place on Thursday and here are some highlights. It was a very cold day to be standing outside.

First they took the subway in their uniforms.

The practice itself.

While at City Hall we checked this out.

De Dokwerker (The Docker) is a statue found inside Toronto City Hall's main concourse that was presented by the mayor of Amsterdam. It commemorates an act of defiance against the Nazi's persecution of Jews.

Wednesday we went to Ikea to see if they still had a carpet that we had liked back in early December. They did, but no sales.

We did buy it, I like that it is made from recycled carpets.

We checked out some murals on our way home.

I made these gluten free buns to use as hamburger buns and they worked well. The recipe makes eight, but I made four to accommodate the burger.

Thursday I stocked up our our fruits and vegetables.

Dinner was salmon, sauteed kale and Greek salad. I made a 3 mustard sauce for the salmon and was impressed that John liked it.

Friday we had fruit for breakfast, sourced from Florida, Mexico and Peru!

We took a quick trip to Bulk Barn as we were low on baking goods and spices.

This was the kind of day it was.

On our way we stopped into the CBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Fun "thrones".

We're back to our Friday night steak dinner.

Had to mention a couple of Canadian news stories, starting with the ridiculous.

CBC is running a Family Feud Canada quiz show. This was an answer this week.

Click here if video above doesn't work.

On a much sadder note, the New York Times reported on the Ukraine plane crash that killed 63  57 Canadians returning home from Tehran. It is not known if the Iranian surface to air missile that caused the crash was deliberate or not.
All I can say is that Trump was responsible for this.
Trump on downed Ukrainian plane: "It was flying at a pretty rough neighborhood, and somebody could've made a mistake."
Wait, so the plane was roughed up and mugged???

BOOK ENDS

I started reading War of the Wives and am enjoying it, siding with each "widow" in turn. I just don't understand why men would burden themselves with two families. The expense can't be easy, as can be seen in this story.
And wow, I did not see that ending coming!

  2. 57 of your youngest, brightest and best. While no sensible person would support Iran, it seems like it was a panic reaction to what has been stirred up by Trump. The evil men do, and he is one of the worst. I hope your PM is not waiting for an apologetic phone call.

  3. I like to think I am not going to be shocked by the things that happen in the world and the explanations that the powerful give, but I really still am!

    I loved those fun thrones.

  4. Same saying here with the silver spoon - great sign, hence.
    Half a chicken!
Oh, I love your TinyTown! Have you heard of Miniatur Wunderland?
On their Website you can see a bit more.

I think your place is too cold for my liking!
So sad with that crash. Was it on purpose, it´s still not really clear, is it.

  5. I was sad to read about that plane crash. You are right though, rough neighborhood ?

You have me very curious about the book War of the Wives, adding to my-read list. Also, thank you for the link for Jamie Oliver’s mushroom stroganoff.

Love the game of thrones takeoff. Very creative.

  6. Love the dinosaur among the diorama!
Your menu is so varied, ours this week has been tuna noodle casserole, fish finger burgers, and tacos

I have no doubt the plane was targeted, Trump is a disgrace, unfortunately our own PM is not any better.

    Wishing you a great week

  7. The plane crash was a tragedy. Why do we have leaders who don't know anything about how to get along with others? Trump is an embarrassment to all of us in America.

I love the TinyTown. You could probably have made one of your own based on all your city excursions.

So glad to hear your thoughts about War of the Wives.

    Have a lovely week!

  9. Your funky new header looks great! The tiny town at city hall is a great display, to be inside instead of braving the cold! Love the "fun" throne where your hubby sat on! From my warm house, the ice skating ring is nice to look at:) I know it's hard to know what is really going on in the U.S. Don't believe any of the interpretations N.Y. times, CNN, CBS are giving. It's not even anymore between Democrats or Republicans. They have trouble reporting the truth, therefore I call it fake news. At one time it will all come out, even when it's in history, like the statue of the dock worker:) Many thanks for your lovely post for All Seasons, Jackie! Have a great week and sty warm:)
