September 2017 - On the Road

Saturday
Six Word Saturday

We spent the day cleaning and getting organized for our trip. The plants had a shower, they were filthy from being on the balcony with all the work being done.
They will stay inside while we are away.

The hot pepper finally turned red on my plant.

Dinner was lamb curry. I had bought a leg of lamb, I should have bought either a boneless piece or peices already cut up.

Sunday

One Word Sunday then a break until Oct 1
Shadow Shot Sunday

More preparations, organizing etc.
And it rained!

I roasted the rest of the lamb leg and had mashed potatoes and mushy peas with it.

Final laundry done, packed and car loaded with some items. Food prepared for lunches the next couple of days. Passports, check!
Dinner ham with the leftover potatoes and peas. Ham will go into our salads for tomorrow.

Tuesday ON THE ROAD!
Tuesday Treasures

We headed out at 9. Click here for the drive.

We ate lunch at the duty free, home made salads. Then crossed the border at Sarnia into Michigan. John thinks we'll need a wheel alignment after driving on those highways.

From Michigan we crossed into Indiana and spent the night in a Hilton Garden Inn in Chesterton. As always Hilton lived up to its promise, when we asked to change rooms due to the air conditioner we were given a 1,000 points as part of their satisfaction program.

Wednesday
After a good breakfast at Hilton we drove into Chesterton to find a mural.

Then on the road with some fun stops and some awful traffic.

Illinos - wow $17 US in highway tolls and Chicage traffic! And really, as I try to find a radio station I pass four Spanish and at least two bible thumping ones.

Not sure what he needs help for????

Finally into Wisconsin.

Lunch - salads made this morning. We bought curds and sausage for dinner.

A stop in Sparta known as the bicycling capital of the world.

La Crosse is home to the world's largest six pack!

Feet up in Rochester MN at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Thursday
Thursday Doors

Up early and had breakfast before we headed out to have a quick look around Rochester.
The KROC studio building is adorned with an old time radio.

We were determined to get a selfie under the ear of corn!

Up early and headed to the Haymarket in Lincoln Nebraska and happened upon the best coffee shop, The Rabbit Hole. There was even gluten free available and the best coffee we've had in three days.

We searched out the Gallery Alley in the Hay Market.

Nebraska is also celebrating its 150th birthday like Canada.
The project is called "Nebraska by Heart," and it's a public art project celebrating Nebraska's Sesquicentennial.

The hearts symbolize Nebraska, the Heartland of America. Each heart started as a blank canvas. Now, artists from across the state have transformed them into unique pieces of art.

Back on  the road before 10 our final destination is Denver CO.

Gothenburg NB is home to two Original Pony Express Stations. The Sam Machette Station is located in a beautiful city park/arboretum. The station was moved to its current location in 1931 after it was donated by Mrs. C.A. Williams.

The museum was free and we dropped in and were totally entertained by the vuounteer.

Once we checked in to the Curtis (post by itself). The Curtis has 12 themed floors so whether you enjoy hanging out with Marge Simpson and the Barbie crew, shake your groove thang in your own private disco pad, or waste away again in Margaritaville, there's room for you.

But seriously? $36 US to self-park or $42 valet? That is the most we have paid in any city.

We wandered around downtown.

Dinner was room service. Where have you ever heard of a steak on a menu priced as MRKT?

BOOKS
I finished Eileen and I was totally blindsided with the unfolding of the story, Eileen is not a nice young woman, but there is a little of her in all of us.
At times the story is jaw-dropping but Eileen just tells it like it is. One of my better reads this year.

I began The Ballroom and no reading the rest of the week.

  1. I love Sarnia, but I haven't been there in a long time. I despise Chicago traffic. I always love to see what you see along the way: signs, murals, street art, sculptures. I don't always comment, but I'm following your trip!

  3. WOW, what a road trip!! You covered a LOT of ground in just one week! We love to take long road trips through multiple states like that. When our sons were younger, we took a 3-week road trip cross-country with our camper every summer. We stay closer to home these days because we don't like to leave my 92 year old FIl for very long, but we still love to travel!

Glad you are enjoying your trip and seeing so much - have fun!

  10. Oh, I am craving a good road trip! We didn't have time to get into the road during summer. Hope we can do something for fall. I like all the signs and establishments you have shown in here. You find so many quirky things on the road. #TPThursday
