inSPIREd Sunday

Sally and Beth host inSPIREd Sunday!

May 2019 - Paris France

On our last day in Paris, we found this church in Montmartre.

The Church of Saint-Jean-de-Montmartre is located at 19 Rue des Abbesses in the 18th arrondissement.

The church is known to locals – for reasons that will become clear – as ‘St-Jean-des-Briques’.

Situated at the foot of Montmartre, it is notable as the first example of reinforced concrete in church construction. Built from 1894 through 1904, it was designed by architect Anatole de Baudot.

From the outside, it is a curious mixture of Byzantine and Art Deco, whereas if you look from the back you might think that is a factory, with its brick wall.

The red brick facade, is used for decoration as well as additional support an insulation. The exterior is also embellished with geometric designs made from multicolored sandstone pearls.

Over the entrance is a  sculpture depicting two angels and San Juan holding a cup and testing the venom from the bite of a snake.

The large stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion are the work of Tournel and Sons.
