I broke this week's post into two parts - Last few days of 2018.

The new header photo was taken by John as we walked the Malecon on NYE. It was mid afternoon and the lighting was perfect. This "sirena" is not usually easy to capture.

I updated my "About Me" tab. I added a new tab "Retirement Travel", a work in progress,  recapping our travels since our retirement travelling started in 2012.

Also started work on our 2018 annual recap. I had good intentions of doing it on a monthly basis during the year and that lasted until May!

We started the first day of the new year by sleeping in late! Then dined on fresh fruit with coconut yogurt served with mimosas and the Rose Parade on TV.

It is so nice to get fresh fruit, so far we've had apples, cantaloupe, bananas, pineapple, pear, oranges and grapefruit.

Another cloudy cool day so we were content with the Rose Bowl, John watched football, I blogged and read. I didn't even get out of my jammies!

Made chili for dinner.

Another cool cloudy day, getting cabin fever as we settled in for the day.

A family member sent me an old photo today, out of the blue. I have no recollection of the occasion, nor do I even remember my dress, although I do recognize the two women behind.

A Photo A Week On the Horizon

12,314 steps or 9.4 km

This beauty has been outside the resort on and off the last week or so.

We got the bus around 9:45 and got off at the Market.

The puppet man got on the bus on his way to work! Click here to see this local icon.

First stop was a full English breakfast at Via Condotti.

Bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes and eggs.

It was busy inside and out.

Next stop was Theatro Angela Peralta for tickets to Help!

We wandered over to Avedina Aleman in search of a new spa that does pedicures but the decided to go to Tippy Toes where we've been and feel comfortable.

Some sights on the way.

Third stop mani pedis at Tippy Toes.

John went for a beer while I had my manicure and then I met him. No real plans we just wandered through town.

Mexican ingenuity.

New.

We took a different, and shorter route to the Malecon.

One of the flower markets in the area.

One of the men sitting inside, waved at us as John took this.
A gordita in Mexican cuisine is a pastry made with masa and stuffed with cheese, meat, or other fillings. They’re also gluten free as they are made with masa flour.Click here for a recipe.

John was struck by the signs and busyness of this street.

The Fisherman's Monument is always hard to get a decent photo.
Often used as a landmark this sculpture and fountain, dates to 1958 & honours local fishermen.
It is also known as "Los Monos Bichis" naked human figures in perfect harmony with marine elements such as fish and a dolphin besides the silhouette of a lying down woman, all of this under a lighthouse.

There are still a lot of Mexican vacationers in town and after two days of clouds and cool weather they were out today.

Cool looking condo.

A new mural on that building above.

Mazatlan means “place of the deer” in the old Nahuatl Indian language.

More along the Malecon. It is the longest malecon (seaview walkway) in the world, stretching 13 miles.
It is dotted with many seafood restaurants and bars.

A new spot on the beach that we needed to check out.

And some live entertainment!

Hadn't noticed this little place before.

Mural as we waited for the bus.

We thought we'd get a good sunset tonight and walked down but it was just okay.

A little cool for a massage on the beach tonight!

Fresh pineapple in January!

Waited for 10 AM to buy tickets for Stratford in July, Billy Elliot, Little Shop of Horrors and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Our walk along the beach today merited us 10,335 steps or 8 KM.

We headed out for lunch with no particular destination in mind. We plan on exploring some of the beach locations close by El Cid while we are here.

Dozens of these guys living in the deserted El Faro resort walls. This one was almost invisible.

Lunch spot.

Pancho's is still in the salsa lead.

Tuna tostada for me.

John's garlic shrimp were more buttery than garlicy, he said Chili Peppers are better.

Checking out what to have the next time.

Lot s of entertainment as you enjoy your food.

I showed John the following video and he is now determined to try the Doritos dish this guy was selling.

It's hard to describe Tostilocos using words. The recipe starts with Nacho Cheese Doritos, which are then topped with a variety of ingredients: cueritos (pickled pork rinds), small batons of jicama, cubed cucumber, grated carrots, peanuts (most often described by the vendors as japonés,the ones with the crunchy, soy sauce-flavored shell), gummy bears, lime juice, chili powder, salsa Valentina or another hot sauce, and chamoy, an addictive sweet-salty-sour sauce made from pickled fruit.
I think John might skip the gummy bears!!

But there are several flavours of Doritos available!

The last building on the right is Chili Peppers.

The beach was really crowded with the holiday visitors making the most of the last few days before back to work and school.

We walked to Royal Villas and then came back by the street.

John promised me a unicorn.

When we got back there was photoshoot taking place.
Her father is fixing her crinolines.

In Mexico, a girl who is having her 15th birthday is called a quinceañera. It is a combination of the Spanish words quince "fifteen" and años "years".The term may also be used to refer to a girl's 15th birthday party, although this is more often referred to as a "fiesta de quince años" or "fiesta de quinceañera."

In many countries in Latin America, it is customary to celebrate a girl's fifteenth birthday party in a very lavish manner. This celebration traditionally marks a girl's coming of age and afterwards she is considered a mature person who is ready to assume family and social responsibilities.

Mother decided to show a little leg and have her son take some photos.

No sunset to speak of again tonight.
Spanish chicken stew for dinner.

BOOKS

First book of the new year finished Into The Water. I didn't love it and even when the killer confessed, it still felt like there was more coming. There was but it didn't satisfy.

If I Die Tonight is keeping me interested!

  7. I don't even know where to start with you! The blog header is great, something I would love to see one day.

Just read your fascinating account of moving from your home to a condo. We have had similar discussions and every now and then wish we could live in Ireland or just leave this country. I'm so embarrassed by the state of government here - Ok, lets not get started on That!

The travel photos are always great and makes me want to see and eat some of what you post. Mmmmm.....gordita.
