Imagine our surprise as our cab took us from the bus station to our hotel, Posada Santa fe yesterday. We entered a tunnel, then another and suddenly we were in this subterranean maze of tunnels with parking, street signs and apparently some kind of logic.
I found this video on Youtube and it is perfect.
The Guanajuato tunnels are a series of wide channels that extended under the city and help divert traffic away from the city centre. These tunnels were not primary constructed for traffic, but as a diversion for the “Rio Guanajuato” (Guanajuato River) to prevent flooding to the early mining town. The tunnels are a unique sight of Guanajuato, with decorative entrances and charming open stretches, but it is unpleasant to walk through the longer sections due to traffic fumes.
Hi Jackie , thank you for finding the link to the Tunnels. What a very interesting place to visit. Not seen anything like this before. Yes your right , I would not want to walk through the tunnels. Unbelievable how the little houses are perched above. Look forward to seeing more.
