While wandering around Auckland we noticed these eggs. I would have loved to have the time to find them all as I love scavenger hunts. They are also in Christchurch and Wellington.

The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt in support of Starship has raised more than $200,000 for the Starship Foundation, a charity supporting our national children’s hospital to provide world-leading care for almost 120,000 patient visits each year.

A total of $204,333 was raised from the sale of 100 giant eggs created by New Zealand artists, 20 of which were auctioned at a gala event and 80 of which were auctioned on Trade Me.  Corporate sponsorships and donated goods and services also contributed significantly to the overall success of the campaign.

Cathedral of St. Patrick and St. Joseph.
Within two months of the grant, on July 29, 1841, a public meeting was held “for the purpose of taking into consideration the best mode of obtaining subscriptions for the erection of an edifice for the worship of Almighty God by persons of that persuasion”.

That evening, 13 men were elected to a building committee and £200 were subscribed. In addition, a subscription list was opened at the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle on Shortland Crescent, home of Mr. Patrick Donovan.

At a meeting the following week, Bishop Pompallier “was pleased to name the intended Roman Catholic church after St. Patrick and St. Joseph".

By January 1842, a small wooden presbytery had been built on the church site.




The land that the Cathedral sits upon is a local and national heritage treasure. The land provided the site for the first Catholic church in Auckland and the first cathedral church in New Zealand.

Day 33 New Zealand to Los Angeles

Finally a morning to sleep in and then we go across to Gloria Jean's for coffee.
Gorgeous sunny morning sitting in the shadow of the Sky Tower.

Practically sitting on the road, John asked me to let him know if anything was coming his way.

There are a lot more Maori here in Auckland.

We track Tim down and get a car for 6:30 PM for $35 to the airport.

We debate what we will do and then decide just to wander on our own.

 Cricket fever is rampant with New Zealand going to the finals.

I finally hav salt and pepper squid which I have wanted to try.

 It starts to rain and we grab a cab back to the hotel where we hang out until 4 PM, drop our luggage with the concierge and go to the casino bar to watch the cricket game, Australia and India.
Needless to say there are quite a few Indians in the bar.

 We are on the March 26 10:45 PM flight Air New Zealand from the International Terminal and arrive in LA on March 26 at 3 PM.

The wine in the lounge was terrible. But the cricket was on so John was happy. He's there in the mauve shirt.
