Friday Finds

1. Starts with A
2. Week's Favorite
3. Macro

The first two will be the same, except we’ll work our way through the alphabet. The second can be a favorite image or activity from the week. The third will be different each time.

June 2016 - Toronto ON

WOW we've been through the alphabet already!

For this alphabet round I was going to only do subway stops but was missing some letters. Like A on the subway line!!!
So I'll do a mix of street signs/districts and interesting subway stations. And sometimes a combination!

We'll start with Adelaide St. One of my favourite jobs was on this street downtown.

Named in 1797 for the young Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, later the wife of King William IV, Adelaide Street has been extended several times east and west consuming lesser streets in its path.

The original section of Adelaide was only a portion of the present street. In 1844, Little Adelaide Street, Adelaide Street and Newgate Street were amalgamated to form Adelaide Street. The street was split into east and west sections in 1884. In 1926, at the request of property owners, Adelaide Street West was extended from Bathurst Street to Shaw Street, incorporating the entirety of Defoe Street and McDonnell Square. The most recent extension came in 1965, when Adelaide Street East was routed onto Duke Street, which crossed between Jarvis Street and Parliament Street. This was done in advance of the opening of the lower section of the Don Valley Parkway and eastern section of the Gardiner Expressway.

Adelaide runs through the Financial District with its many high rise office buildings.

There is a lot of history on this street as well.

Toronto's First Post Office is operated by the Town of York Historical Society. The Society was born of the interest generated by the restoration of an historical block of buildings at Adelaide and George Streets, in downtown Toronto. These included the Bank of Upper Canada (1827), the De La Salle Building (1871), and Toronto’s First Post Office (1833). Many experts – architects, historians and curators – volunteered assistance during the restoration project.

.

The  Town of York Society now operates Toronto’s First Post Office as a museum, a National Historic Site and a post office.

I will post more photos of the post office when we get to the Letter O!

MACRO
Berries are in season and we have been eating a lot of them, fresh with yogurt, in smoothies and making jam and baking.

I played around with this photo.

  8. It is so amazing to think that a single street could have so much history and been around for that long. Wow! I'm truly going to enjoy all the history lessons you give us in this round. I love the sign! I always think it would be fun to do the Taste of Des Moines festival when they have it. Never made it there though. The berry looks yummy! Fun edit. Thanks so much for joining in Friday's Hunt. Hope you have a great week!
