Weekend Cooking

April 2016 - Toronto ON

Very quiet weekend as the Masters was on so John was glued to the TV, along with practicing his putting.

I've been going over our trips to England, Scotland and Ireland and blogging them for British Isles Friday.

I watched a BBC series called Dolly and Em, kinda interesting but not really bonding with either woman.
I also watched the HBO documentary Going Clear profiles former Scientology members. Fascinating and left me shaking my head.
We both watched a four part series called House of Saddam.
I started watching Homegrown a documentary about counter terrorism in the US.

I made chicken soup that was delicious thanks to a recipe posted last week on Weekend Cooking by Katherine I Wish I Lived in a Library. I did ab lib and add some curry to it.

We needed a trip to St. Lawrence Market to stock up on fruits and vegetables, however we chose Monday and it happens to be closed on Mondays so we went off to Lanzarotta a fruit and vegetable supplier to restaurants and open to the public.

We then went to the movies and saw Eye in the Sky with Helen Mirren and it was quite an eye-opener about modern warfare.

Sticking with smoothies - a couple of favourites. These are from Incredible Smoothies 21 day Green Smoothie Boot Camp. She will send you a week's worth of recipes so you never have the same thing.

Tuesday we went for burgers. We are always looking for a good burger. A new place opened called Batch, it is the creation of a local brewery, Creemore.

I will say the burger was delicious, I thought the fries were average but John liked them.

BATCH Burger
dry aged beef + cheddar + red onion + ranch on a fresh made bun.

I met a good friend on Thursday and had a not very good Thai noodle soup.

Friday we did get to St. Lawrence Market to pick up food for the weekend. We stopped at Buster's for clam chowder and it was great.

Friends in and we had a delicious blueberry cream cheese strudel from the market.
My pic shows the apple but the blueberry is right next to it.

WEEKLY DINNER MENU
Saturday - corned beef, white and sweet potato mash, brussel sprouts
Sunday  - leftover corned beef, added carrots to the potato mash, baby spinach sauteed with garlic
Monday - instituting Meatless Monday cheesy broccoli baked potatoes.
Tuesday - we went out for burgers so simply had beans and toast.
Wednesday - pork chops with a dijon mustard and brown sugar glaze, potato, parsnip carrot mash, broccoli and beets.
Thursday - teriyaki salmon - delicious, a keeper, rice, scallions.
I also made ginger honey carrots, using Martha Stewart's recipe wasn't impressed.
Friday - steak with sauteed mushrooms, onions and green peppers.

  1. A nice post, Jackie. It made me hungry, especially when thinking and seeing Buster's. I like seafood. How are they with fish and chips? Mushy peas?

    1. Will try their fish and chips next time and let you know. Oh, if only, mushy peas, but alas they are seldomly served here. I make them at home though.

  2. I love the photos of your travels but I surely enjoy the ones you post around Toronto. I would love to visit your beautiful city one day. The meal plan sounds great, you gave me some ideas for the upcoming week.
The Eye in the Sky movie is on my list, I love anything with Helen Mirren.

  4. I saw Going Clear and found it fascinating. I really didn't know much about Scientology. That Helen Mirren movie sounds good to. Yay for more smoothie recipes! I'm going to pick up some ingredients this week and start having them for lunch. And those strudels? They looks sooooooo good.

  7. The smoothies do look good.

I did see Going Clear- compelling and disturbing. How anyone can give themselves over to that cult is baffling.

  9. Looks like a good week. Cherries and mangoes are probably my two favorite smoothie fruits so that smoothie looks particularly good to me. ;-)

  13. I'm so glad the soup turned out well! I really enjoyed the book but haven't been able to cook from it yet. The cherry mango smoothie looks fantastic and since I have a sore throat this morning looks nice and soothing. Your Batch order looks so good. I love a good cheeseburger!
