Self-Isolation Week 19

Weekend Cooking is now hosted by Marg at The Intrepid Reader!

July 2020 - Toronto ON

AROUND TORONTO

From The New Yorker:
A safer place to play

The latest sign of how far the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in combating the virus: The N.H.L. announced that it would hold all of its remaining games this year in two Canadian cities. The U.S. isn’t safe enough.
The 24 hockey teams with the best records — 18 of which are U.S.-based — will travel to Toronto or Edmonton for a two-month tournament (without fans), starting Aug. 1. Las Vegas had been a leading candidate to serve as a host city until the recent virus surge across the Sun Belt.

JULY 17 STAGE 3

All of northern Ontario, as well as Ottawa, eastern Ontario, and much of the southwest, will be allowed to move into Stage 3, but Toronto, the surrounding regions, Niagara, and Windsor-Essex and Lambton will remain in Stage 2 for at least a week. However, parts of the province that are moving forward will be able to access a much wider variety of businesses and entertainment.

The types of businesses that will be allowed to reopen include movie theatres, restaurants and bars (no longer restricted to outdoor service only), outdoor and indoor playgrounds, escape rooms, and bowling alleys. Karaoke is allowed but only in a larger bar or restaurant and only with appropriate barriers between singers and crowds.

All new businesses are restricted to a hard limit of 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors — that will apply to movie theatres regardless of the number of theatres operating.

We've had a few people in for estimates. Interesting to see how cautious they all are. One blinds company I contacted only wanted to do a  virtual consultation which I declined as it involved complicated measurements for blinds that I felt should be done in person.
The next person from a blinds company called to make an appointment saying he was only doing two a day and would require me to wear a mask, not a problem, as he would be and there to be no more than two people at home.
The electrician said he required me to wear a mask, and to have only one person at home.
The consultant who measured the kitchen job changed her shoes immediately on entrance, work a mask the whole time, explained they didn't hand out business cards to reduce contact and said she sanitized all her tools before and after a job.

OUT AND ABOUT SAFELY

More photos from last week's Van Gogh exhibit.

Saturday and it rained!

We got the balcony (windows cleaned on Friday and spider treatment applied) back into order.

Monday and I didn't go out, I wanted to but veered towards being cautious.
The electrician came and we discussed the size of socket and the placement.

Tuesday we were going to look at flooring but instead stayed in.

Wednesday John headed to an early golf game and I had an appointment with a blinds consultant to cover our windows.
We had removed the shutters a few years ago. Privacy is not an issue but the sun can be especially when the sun is setting. There are shutters in the office and our bedroom which we wanted to replace.

By the end of the meeting I had picked out the coverings and signed the contract.
We will do the whole condo in the same colour but in the bedroom will have the blackout on the back.

Thursday it was rainy and we had to go looking at flooring. We have one estimate from our usual contractor and a couple of other contractors we are looking at. We went to Rona but the selection was limited. But at Home Depot we found a better selection. And I spotted this sign so we signed up for it. This way we can get more than just a high level measurement that our current contractor provided. If the price is right...

And we stopped at Burger's Priest and picked up burgers and fries for lunch. Delicious. John said their gluten free bun was really good, like they used to make.

Friday John golfed and I took the streetcar to Queen St and Augusta. First stop fabric store to see if they had ends or quilting pieces and they did so I got 7 pieces for $20.

Then I walked up Augusta towards Kensington Market.

All that garbage was being cleaned out. There may have been a homeless issue as there was a police car to the right.

KM - Kensington Market

A great shop Blue Banana.

All a-glitter!

COOKING

Saturday roast chicken with stuffing, new boiled potatoes and broccolini.
The carcass become soup.

Sunday and I was on breakfast duty and decided to do potato cakes stuffed with mushrooms and cheese  along with black pudding.

Lamb Shepherd's pie with mashed potato, cauliflower and broccolini, all three mashed together.

I made the herb crusted pork chops again this week but I also brined the pork chops this time. I wouldn't bother with the brining, I didn't feel it added anything.

Leftover lamb shepherd's pie and salad.

Wednesday John had an early golf game so I made apple fritters with bacon for breakfast.
I then used the rest of apples to make a caramel upside down apple cake. It was okay but it didn't really make a sticky caramel.

I had frozen apples so I made some ice cream as well.

I used the leftover pork chop and added shrimp to make spring rolls (we also had last week).
I made a different sweet and sour sauce, much better than last week and no ketchup! It uses pineapple juice. And a peanut dipping sauce.

John had the baked haddock and I had salmon with maple syrup and salad.

Friday John made black pudding and fried eggs for breakfast. Again we have double yolks.

I had the can of crushed pineapple (left from the sweet and sour sauce) so I made this pineapple poke cake. Delicious and easy! No mixer!
Steak frites for dinner.

THROWBACK TRAVEL - THE FOOD EDITION

Potato chips are universal and something we pick up when we want a snack when away.

READING

I am reading Stay Where I Can See You.
A seemingly normal suburban family experiences a dream-come-true windfall, which sends them back to the city, to a big house, a new, more comfortable, life.

My kind of read and a double bonus as it is set in Toronto!

Weekend Cooking

April 2016 - Toronto ON

Very quiet weekend as the Masters was on so John was glued to the TV, along with practicing his putting.

I've been going over our trips to England, Scotland and Ireland and blogging them for British Isles Friday.

I watched a BBC series called Dolly and Em, kinda interesting but not really bonding with either woman.
I also watched the HBO documentary Going Clear profiles former Scientology members. Fascinating and left me shaking my head.
We both watched a four part series called House of Saddam.
I started watching Homegrown a documentary about counter terrorism in the US.

I made chicken soup that was delicious thanks to a recipe posted last week on Weekend Cooking by Katherine I Wish I Lived in a Library. I did ab lib and add some curry to it.

We needed a trip to St. Lawrence Market to stock up on fruits and vegetables, however we chose Monday and it happens to be closed on Mondays so we went off to Lanzarotta a fruit and vegetable supplier to restaurants and open to the public.

We then went to the movies and saw Eye in the Sky with Helen Mirren and it was quite an eye-opener about modern warfare.

Sticking with smoothies - a couple of favourites. These are from Incredible Smoothies 21 day Green Smoothie Boot Camp. She will send you a week's worth of recipes so you never have the same thing.

Tuesday we went for burgers. We are always looking for a good burger. A new place opened called Batch, it is the creation of a local brewery, Creemore.

I will say the burger was delicious, I thought the fries were average but John liked them.

BATCH Burger
dry aged beef + cheddar + red onion + ranch on a fresh made bun.

I met a good friend on Thursday and had a not very good Thai noodle soup.

Friday we did get to St. Lawrence Market to pick up food for the weekend. We stopped at Buster's for clam chowder and it was great.

Friends in and we had a delicious blueberry cream cheese strudel from the market.
My pic shows the apple but the blueberry is right next to it.

WEEKLY DINNER MENU
Saturday - corned beef, white and sweet potato mash, brussel sprouts
Sunday  - leftover corned beef, added carrots to the potato mash, baby spinach sauteed with garlic
Monday - instituting Meatless Monday cheesy broccoli baked potatoes.
Tuesday - we went out for burgers so simply had beans and toast.
Wednesday - pork chops with a dijon mustard and brown sugar glaze, potato, parsnip carrot mash, broccoli and beets.
Thursday - teriyaki salmon - delicious, a keeper, rice, scallions.
I also made ginger honey carrots, using Martha Stewart's recipe wasn't impressed.
Friday - steak with sauteed mushrooms, onions and green peppers.

BUD AND BLOOM

TORONTO LIFE

Friday My Town Shoot Out - favourite street.

Saturday was an overcast type of day so I was busy cooking in the kitchen. See Bon Appetit section below.

Sunday John watched golf and I ended up going to the Ukrainian and Polish street festivals. Thanks to the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission), I got on at Old Mill around 1:15 and went one stop to Jane where they announced that all service had stopped on Line 1 as they had lost communication. Decided to wait it out as they then said that they were working on it. Around 1:45 they stated that shuttle buses were available. I have no faith in the shuttle bus system in Toronto, I have yet to see them dispatch enough to handle the crowds at each station. My plan was to wait until 2 PM and then get off at Jane.

Up onto Bloor at Jane and the Ukrainian Festival.

I walked from Jane to Runnymede and the subway was working so I got back on at 2:28 and headed to Dundas West. It didn't look too busy as I started walking down Roncesvalles but then a sea of people appeared in front of me!

Click here for photos of food and here for more photos of Roncesvalles.

Some random photos taken along Roncesvalles.

Monday I went downtown to pick up some groceries and wander around.

Interesting sunlight reflecting off the Royal Bank building.

I wanted to find this bookstore I had read about. Doesn't it look like a great place to spend a rainy day?

Tuesday we waited around for our bathroom vanities to be delivered. Then they called to say they would come on Wednesday.

Wednesday we took turns. I went shopping in the morning and John golfed in the afternoon.

New shoes!

Friday John suggested we try Walhburgers but they still haven't opened. It was a bright, somewhat chilly day so we went to Harbourfront instead.

Amsterdam Brew House On the Lake

John declared this to be a very good burger! There were many other items on the menu that we would like to try.

Three brown butter lobster rolls with fennel and topped with apple fennel and snap peas, delicious!

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Sun rising early one morning.

I took these photos walking back from a pedicure.

There are not as many inukshuks this year. I'm not sure why, last year there was a man who spent his weekends constructing these works of art but I haven't seen him this year.

BON APPETIT

Click on the links to find the recipes.

On Saturday I needed to clean out the fridge. I made a mulligatawny soup loosely following Emeril's recipe, from the chicken and and vegetables languishing in the fridge. John declared this the best ever curry ever.

Then I made a new recipe for lemon blueberry loaf.

We had our weekly steak dinner carrots and baked potatoes.

Sunday - Since I had been at the Polish Festival we had rye bread, peorgies and homemade cabbage rolls since I couldn't find any at the festival.

Monday John suggested we have flank steak with broccoli. I used my trusty flank steak recipe and it was delicious served with homemade gravy.

There was enough left over for Tuesday's dinner.

Wednesday was lamp chops with cauliflower and broccoli gratin.  I used my potato au gratin recipe but added feta cheese to the mix.

Thursday ham, boiled potatoes and corn.

Friday after our lunch out as mentioned above we had eggs, tomatoes and ham.

HOUSE AND HOME
YES we finally arranged and received delivery of our new bathroom vanities. Now to arrange removal of the ugly ones and get these installed!!
