The Juno Awards, more popularly known as the JUNOS, are awards presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. New members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame are also inducted as part of the awards ceremonies. The Juno Awards of 2022 were held on May 15, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario. The awards were presented at the Budweiser Stage, an outdoor venue, and was hosted by actor Simu Liu.
Simu Liu is one proud Canadian. Liu gushed about his hometown in his opening monologue, which was a new and improved version of the much-loved “I Am Canadian” Molson commercial, seemingly referencing that infamous Will Smith Oscars slap, his fellow Canadian artists, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and more.
The star began, “Some crazy energy Toronto. It’s almost as if you guys have been cooped up at home for two years straight or something. Now we are broadcasting live nationwide at Budweiser Stage so if anyone has ever wanted to go viral like around the world now’s your chance. Come on, the floor is open. Have at ‘er.
“No one? Avril? Shawn? Any takers? Front row? Nobody wants to slap me? Okay, hey sure. Suit yourselves.”
Liu continued, “We’re here to celebrate artists like Shawn Mendes, Avril Lavigne, and Arcade Fire who like me have all fulfilled the ultimate Canadian dream of making it in America.
“Yes, but… but… to our credit we always come back… we do… because we love this country. I love this country.”
Giving a shout-out to Tim Hortons and his love of hockey, Liu went on: “I proudly fill my days with Canadian inventions like basketball, Timbiebs, or insulin, and hey not a lot of people know this but Canada also invented the pacemaker, which we all desperately need because the Leafs keep giving us heart attacks. Better luck next year, boys.”
He added, “In Canada you can truly have anything except for affordable housing. That one’s a tough one. And whether you call it a cabin, a camp or a cottage, we spell weekend without the third e,” referencing the Canadian hitmaker.
Simu Liu is a Canadian actor and stuntman known for portraying Shang-Chi in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
He also played Jung Kim in the CBC Television sitcom Kim's Convenience and received nominations at the ACTRA Awards and Canadian Screen Awards for his work in Blood and Water.
The name “Sunnyside” had been used to denote a beach and its surrounding area for 70-plus years before the amusement park opened. The name may have been coined by George Howard, a prominent citizen whom in 1848 had built a home overlooking the shore on the sunny side of a hill. The other possibility is that subsequent owner George Cheney, named it after American author Washington Irving’s home in Tarrytown, New York.
The Ocean House Hotel was built in 1884. It came to house a Bake-Rite shop, Laura Secord Candy Shop, Tamblyn Drugstore, and a United Cigar Store. Some of these early Canadian businesses would survive into the present to become country-wide chain stores. The structure itself, still stands at the corner of present-day Queen Street and Roncesvalles Avenue above what would generally become the amusement park and specifically, The Boulevard Club’s location.
By the 1890’s the population was large enough to warrant the building of a streetcar service to the district, which was extended by new owners in 1893. One promotion started in that decade was the bathing-car service offered free to kids in the summer. They would pick up any children with bathing suits & towels and transport them free to and from the beach area west of Toronto. This service would continue until August of 1950 when lack of patronage caused it to be discontinued.
The building still stands (obviously as these are our photos!) and is often used for photoshoots.
In The Handmaid's Tale season 3 episode 8 the fortress-like building where June’s daughter goes to school is actually the innocuous pavilion at Sunnyside Beach.
Pre-pandemic there was a lakeside restaurant.
Born in Toronto in 1899, Gus Ryder demonstrated a natural athletic ability as a young man. After he rescued two fellow hockey players who had fallen through the ice on Grenadier Pond in 1916, he vowed to make swimming instruction his personal avocation.
Ryder also coached marathon swimmer Marilyn Bell who, in 1954, at age 16, was the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. She swam the English Channel in 1955 and the Straits of Juan de Fuca in 1956. Bell is listed in the top ten of 20th century Canadian female athletes.
In 1980, the pool was renamed as “Sunnyside Gus Ryder Pool” after Gus Ryder, who was the founder of the Lakeshore Swim Club of New Toronto and Marilyn’s swimming coach!
Sunnyside Amusement Park (also known as Sunnyside Beach Park) was a popular amusement park in Toronto that ran from 1922 to 1955, demolished in 1955 to facilitate the building of the Gardiner Expressway project. It was located on the Lake Ontario waterfront at the foot of Roncesvalles Avenue, west of downtown Toronto.
Billy Goodkat is the mad Irish genius behind much of the exceptional spray painted imagery you’ve seen on storefronts and alleyways all over Owen Sound. He’s also a community focused individual with a great passion for cultivating artistic talent in others. A Belfast man originally, Billy made his way to Owen Sound in 2011 in the pursuit of love.
He’s been the mastermind behind a few high profile installations such as Artists' Alley, involving local students as well. “Artists' Alley” is between the Bleeding Carrot and the Milk Maid. This partnership between Billy, Community Foundation Grey Bruce, and the Artist’s Co-op saw him mentoring local students and encouraging their artistic growth. Not shy about his passion for inspiring others, especially youth, Billy says: “People don’t realize how much ability they have, if you show them a few techniques, they waken to the fact that they can do it. Someone might say they can only draw stick figures, I guarantee that given an hour you can show them they can draw a great portrait.”
Dr. Cobbler’s on 2nd Ave East is another arresting piece, and it represents his first effort to require scaffolding. Says Billy: “I used to have a fear of heights, then I went up there and I was fine.” Main street is a better place for Billy having conquered his fear as the work on the 2nd storey is very lovely. Vibrant swaying peacock feathers overlay two distinct black and white patterns – give it a good look next time you’re downtown, you’ll appreciate it.
High school students from West Hill, OSCVI, and St Mary’s spent many of their afternoons working alongside graffiti artist Billy Goodkat to create this mural. The theme of this painting is the Mexican word “VIDA”, which means life.
Goodkat says the piece extending throughout the alleyway begins with a representation of birth at one end, and ends with a loose representation of a Day of the Dead celebration on the other.
