Healy's Pass goes over the Cork-Kerry border, crossing the spectacular Caha Mountains.

It was created in 1847 during the famine years in order to help prevent starvation. It’s named for Time Michael Healy, a politician from Cork who served as the first governor general of the Irish Free State. Upon his retirement, Healy asked that the bridleway winding through the pass be upgraded and improved.

Kate Kearney's Cottage

I first visited Kate kearney's Cottage in 1970 with my parents. It was summer and the last place I wanted to be was on vacation with my parents!! How I'd change that now!!

September 2015 - a very fast forward and 45 years later I'm back with John and friends K and B.

Kate was a well known beauty in Ireland in the years before the Great Famine (1845-1849). The legend of Kate has captured the imagination pf people far and wide down through the years.
It was at this síbín that Kate distilled her famous poitín, 'Kate Kearney's Mountain Dew', which was "very fierce and wild, requiring not less than seven times its own quantity of water to tame and subdue it." It was of course illicit. However, Kate flouted the law and invited the weary traveller to partake of her hospitality.

Pictured below are Julia Burke and her husband Donal Mór Moriarty who lived in Kate Kearney's Cottage in the middle of the 19th Century. She and her husband are the first to be documented after Kate herself. They are Jim Coffey's (the current owner) Great Great Grandparents.

The Lakes of Killarney and Muckross House.



South and west of the town of Killarney in Co. Kerry is an expanse of rugged mountainous country. This includes the McGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland which rise to a height of over 1000 metres. At the foot of these mountains nestle the world famous lakes of Killarney. Here where the mountains sweep down to the lake shores, their lower slopes covered in woodlands, lies the 10,236 hectare (26,000 acres), Killarney National Park . The distinctive combination of mountains, lakes, woods and waterfalls under ever changing skies gives the area a special scenic beauty.

This nineteenth century Victorian mansion is set against the stunning beauty of Killarney National Park. The house stands close to the shores of Muckross Lake, one of Killarney's three lakes, famed worldwide for their splendour and beauty.

In 1970 my sister and I went to Ireland with my parents and had this photo taken.

Limerick Castle - the boys went to the castle and we went shopping.


King John’s Castle, on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick City.


King John was the brother of Richard the Lionheart, associated with legends such as Robin Hood and the Knights’ of the Round Table. John, Lord of Ireland, though not as popular as his brother, was a formidable force in battle and when he set about claiming territory in Ireland, he certainly made his mark in Limerick.

Remember it is July! A trip to the beach at Milltown Malbay.

It doesn't look very warm.

Obviously my sister doesn't think so.

We stayed a night in Ashford, where my parents had lived when they first got married.

On the road again! Next stop Dublin.
