Tuesday Treasures

Tom hosts Tuesday's Treasures.

February 1980 - Montreal to Florida

We took a winter road trip with my parents. We spent the first night in Washington DC where it was cold, I just checked it was 33F.

This was the days of Canadians not requiring passports to enter the States. My, how things have changed.

This was the year of  the "Canadian Caper",the popular name given to the joint covert rescue by the Canadian government and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of six American diplomats who had evaded capture during the seizure of the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran, and taking of embassy personnel as hostages by Islamist students and militants on November 4, 1979.

The "caper" involved CIA agents (Tony Mendez and a man known as "Julio") joining the six diplomats to form a fake film crew made up of six Canadians, one Irishman and one Latin American who were finishing scouting for an appropriate location to shoot a scene for the nominal science-fiction film Argo. The ruse was carried off on the morning of Sunday, January 27, 1980, at the Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. The eight Americans successfully boarded a Swissair flight to Zürich and escaped Iran.

Americans were grateful for Canadian efforts to rescue American diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis.

We benefited during this trip with many perks like tickets to Disney at Canadian dollar entrance prices.

We snapped a few photos the next day as we left DC.

Driving through South Carolina we are entertained by the billboards for South of the Border.

We went to Disney Magic Kingdom.

Busch Gardens

The 10 cent bear we had to drag around with us after I won it flipping a dime on a game.

Cape Kennedy

Marineland

The Everglades

We drove to Key West.

Sepia Saturday

Sepia Saturday I've been MIA most of the year, but want to get back into it!

These are Christmas photos from the late 1970s to early 1980s. They are at my parents' house in Montreal.

These are the Coolbrook Christmases.

By then each of my aunts and uncle had their own Christmas dinner but they always congregated at my parents' house in the evening.

We were all grown up by then, but Mom would go overboard on the gifts, never expensive, and lots of homemade goodies.

Moroccan Treasures

1980 and we take our second trip together to Morocco!! So glad John got my travel bug!

I am guessing we went in November and we stayed at Al Moggar for a $1,000 each flight and hotel.

We flew Royal Air Maroc from Montreal. Ahhh the 80s when flying was a pleasure. We even received menus.

Around the hotel. I googled it and it still exists but on a much grander scale.

I do wish I had done a travel diary back then. Never mind wishing the photos were digital, there would be so many more to tell the story.

Exploring.

I have always been drawn to fish markets.

In town.

We ate here several times and always say that if we were creating a perfect menu and could just flit back to places to eat the courses this place would represent the best carrot soup and omelets.

Souk El Had d'Agadir or market. I did buy a basket and we also bought a bag made from camel. When we got on the plane we couldn't figure out what the awful smell was, it was the camel bag.

Mucky day at the souks.

We had these for years!
