Day 13 Newfoundland Labrador Viking Trail 2022 - Day 7 End Tour

Sep 16 Day 7: Cow Head to Deer Lake to Grand Falls - Windsor NL

End Point Deer Lake, Atlantic Tours arrangements end on arrival at the Deer Lake Airport. (Breakfast) Please note: Our tour arrives back in Deer Lake at approximately 12:30 pm.

Pick up our car in Deer Lake.

DEER LAKE TO Grand Falls Windsor LATE START

After breakfast we boarded a separate smaller bus for those finishing the tour today. Eleven of us are either continuing on on our own or flying home. The remaining 40 something are on the coach until September 21.

Karen said we would be together one more time in 15 minutes as we would make a stop in Sally's Cove.

The lobster fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador dates back to the 1870’s, with landings peaking in 1889 at 8,000 tonnes. The highest landings in the past 40 years was approximately 3,000 tonnes, with the annual average at approximately 2,300 tonnes.
In the 1920’s, there was a stock collapse which resulted in a closure of the lobster fishery from 1925-1927. After this closure, a number of regulatory measures were introduced to protect undersized and egg-bearing lobsters.
In 1976, limited entry licences were introduced and a reduction in lobster licences over the years has continued as a result of various licence retirement programs in the 1990’s, the introduction of Enterprise Combining policy in 2007, and through the Atlantic Lobster Sustainability Measures from 2010-2013. The number of lobster licences has decreased dramatically since 1990, by 47% to 2,400 licences issued in 2017.

There are no licences available now, unless someone sells or dies. It would cost upwards of a million dollars to set yourself up if you could get a licence.

The fishing season ranges from eight to 10 weeks, from mid-April to mid-July, depending on the LFA; with the bulk of the catch caught in May and June. Lobster traps are baited and weighted to stay on the ocean floor. The traps are hauled by attached ropes marked with buoys on the surface of the water.

There are 16 Lobster Fishing Areas (LFA) in Newfoundland and 41 in the Maritimes.

This is an example of a schedule for a district.
"DFO advises that Lobster Fishing Area 12 will open at 0600 hours on April 21, 2022 and close at 2000 hours on June 30, 2022."
At the end of that season they must have all their traps out of the water and on the side of the road.

And a sad folk song.

We made our final farewells again and we made one more stop before Deer Lake.
ROCKY HARBOUR

DEER LAKE and we retrieve our car and set out for Grand Falls - Windsor.

We stopped in Springdale because we used to live on Springdale!

  2. I'm checking out your trip Jackie. Back in 2018 my husband and I flew into Deer Lake and spend some time on the western part of the island. It was beautiful. I'm curious about yours. Happy new week.
