Weekend Cooking

May 2009 - Xian China

We went to the opera in Xian where we were served a dumpling dinner before the show.

The menu was as follows:

Lotus root with lemon.

Each steamer came with 3 types of dumpling and 3 pieces of each.
Duck – shaped like a duck
Pork – shaped like a pig
Shark’s fin
Ham
Albacore
Mushroom
Shrimp
Cabbage
Chcken – piece of corn at top to resemble an egg
Pork and leek
Hazelnut
Fried dumplings
Large plate of regular pork
Chicken Soup with baby dumplings

I especially loved the duck dumplings shaped like ducks!

  3. I would happily make a meal of dumplings. In fact, I often do when we order from the local Chinese restaurant. Love how they shaped these to portray the fillings!

  7. How fun! Love the duck dumplings!

My husband is allergic to red meat, including pork. It's a worry when we travel. If only everyone would shape their food like this -- then he could eat the poultry-shaped things and skip the pig-shaped ones!

  8. Mmm I like dumplings, I'd give the Shark's Fin one a miss though.

  9. I think I'd skip the shark fin, too. The hazelnut seems to stand out--I didn't know they had anything to do with Chinese cuisine.
