How Sweet the Sound

I'm linking up over here today.

May 2010 - London England

More than 250 brightly painted baby elephant statues made their debut on the streets of London, England in May 2010.
In a bid to raise awareness about the plight of the Asian elephant, UK-based charity Elephant Family asked big-name designers and artists to paint the baby elephant statues in the country’s largest public art campaign. Participating artists include Lulu Guinness, Diane von Furstenberg, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Tommy Hilfiger and Isaac Mizrahi.

May 2009  - Xian China

Fence (railing) along the city walls of Xian. You can rent a bicycle and ride along the walls, we rode a tandem bike, which was an experience...

When Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), captured Huizhou, a hermit named Zhu Sheng admonished him that he should 'built high walls, store abundant food supplies and take time to be an Emperor,' so that he could fortify the city and unify the other states. After the establishment of the Ming dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang followed his advice and began to enlarge the wall built initially during the old Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), creating the modern Xian City Wall. It's the most complete city wall that has survived in China, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world.

May 2009 - Xian China

Temple of the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian An in Chinese, also, Eight Immortals Palace, formerly Eight Immortals Nunnery), as its name indicates, is mainly dedicated to the legendary Eight Immortals: Han Zhongli, Zhang Guolao, Han Xiangzi, Tieguai Li, Cao Guojiu, Lv Dongbin, Lan Caihe and He Xiangu. Located on Changle Fang Street in the eastern suburb, it is the biggest Taoist temple in Xian and is a famous Taoist architecture in northwest China.

I loved this buddha and was sorry that we didn't have a longer time to wander around this temple as we had reservations for Dumplings and Opera!

In coming weeks I will post more photos of this temple.

Travel Photo Thursday

I'm posting over at The Budget Travelers' Sandbox.

May 2009 - River Li China

Images like this can be found in Guilin, in the Chinese province of Guangxi. Old men sit patiently on a bamboo raft with their cormorants.
Cormorants are diving aquatic birds that have been used for centuries along the Li River, a shallow river. Cormorants can hold their breath for long periods of time and proudly swim back to the fisherman with their catch and are rewarded with a treat of some small fish. A band is fastened around the bird's slender neck so they can't swallow the larger fish they catch.
Today cormorant fishing is mainly for the tourists who now "catch" photos of these intriguing birds and the gentle old men. The men give daytime and nighttime performances along the river.

52 Photos Project

52 Photos Project

This week's theme is NEON COLOR.

Ever since we visited the Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas in January I will always associate the word neon with that visit.

Barbary Coast Casino was renamed Bill's Gambling Hall in 2007. February 2013 saw the closure of Bill's.

When Bill's reopens next year, what had become a Strip antique will be a boutique hotel with new hotel rooms, a refurbished casino, a second-story restaurant, and a rooftop pool and nightclub. It will have yet another name.

Dreaming of France

The rules for this meme are: Please join this weekly meme. Grab a copy of the photo above and link back to An Accidental Blog. Share with the rest of us your passion for France. Did you read a good book set in France? See a movie? Take a photo in France? Have an adventure? Eat a fabulous meal or even just a pastry? Or if you're in France now, go ahead and lord it over the rest of us. We can take it.
Maybe we can all satisfy our yearnings for France, until we get there again.

We stayed at the Hotel Trocadero last August for a night before we boarded the MS Avalon Creativity to cruise from Paris to Normandy and back.

This hotel is within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower which was our first stop after checking in.
The hotel lobby is delightfully decorated.
