I missed featuring/posting this Homeless Jesus in 2024, it is outside St. Andrew's on King St. W in Toronto.

Homeless Jesus are designed by Timothy Schmalz, a Canadian sculptor and devout Catholic. 

Both views of the homeless person and the angel from Timothy Schmalz's sculpture 'Be Welcoming'.

"It looks like a pretty rough-looking person with a hoodie, a backpack with all of his possessions. But then as you walk around the piece, the piece literally transforms into an Angel. The backpack on one side hides the Angel wings on the other side," Schmalz told CBC.

"The hoodie on the one side changes into this flowing hair. And I've created this beautiful, very impressionistic face of an Angel that is welcoming you to sit down right beside."

The sculptor Timothy Paul Schmalz who has a number of pieces including the famous "homeless jesus" statue. Here's a writeup from his website.

The “Be Welcoming” Sculpture was created in 2019, inspired by the same scripture text that is at the center of the “Angels Unawares” monument in St. Peter’s Square, Hebrews 13:2 “Be welcoming to strangers, many have entertained angels unawares.”

The sculpture is a visual interpretation of what is considered one of the most beautiful, poetic passages in the Bible. The sculpture shows a weary traveler/pilgrim who visually transforms into an angel when one walks over to the seat that the figure is welcoming the viewer to take. “Be Welcoming” shows us that all humanity possesses a spiritual nature resembling angels. It reminds us that we can become like angels on our journey through life, and also that spirituality is found only when one is generous to oneself, others, and God.

We flew from Toronto to Amsterdam and then to Edinburgh where we picked up a car.

On our way to our timeshare accommodations in Aberfoyle we stopped in Luss, home to Loch Lomond.

Here's a lovely new version of the old singalong favourite.

Almost in the centre of the photo on the beach is a lone bagpiper playing.

Settled in. We attended a Scotch tasting session hosted by the timeshare one evening, it was a good thing we didn't have  to go very far to our condo.

John discovered his scotch of choice on this trip.

We all know the song "Mull of Kintyre" by Wings (Paul Mc Cartney).

A while after this trip we were watching a Scottish movie, My Name is Joe (1998) and a scene was filmed here in the town of Tarbert, Argyll. 

The highlight for John was playing at St. Andrew's where we spent a night and had great curry for dinner.

John may have had a gorgeous day to golf but the next day as we drove back to Aberfoyle it poured and we got a flat in Pittenweem. But the auto association came to our rescue and fixed the tire.

Another day we drove to Stirling Castle. It looked much the same in 2010.

We then flew to Ireland and spent a week around Ireland 2001 Ballybunion.

I first traveled to England with my Mom in 1960

My parents took us back as a family in 1970.

John and I first went together in 1986 to London.

The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage. The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several days, has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia.

I walked past this sculpture with a friend last week, and she commented on it. I was annoyed with myself that I couldn't remember the story behind it. I searched my blog and didn't find any mention of it, so that made me feel better.


Lineal Order - George Boileau, 1989

Located at 71 Simcoe St. on the steps of the Symphony Place condominium, the man appears to be a little stern but then you see the little boy along with the architectural motif on the wall.

As you look closer you see a bronze statue of a bare footed man wearing an overcoat. Is he ruminating on his past?
Behind him on the wall is ‘his shadow’.

The clothing is timeless.  The motif on the wall suggests a simple home, also timeless, the shape that all children learn to draw. A simple structure, embossed on a high rise luxury condominium building. 

A small boy stands on the other side of the stairs. He too is bare foot and wearing a coat. Is he looking towards his future?

 He is looking toward the shadow on the wall.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose (“the more it changes, the more they stay the same").
