Weekend Cooking Union Station

July 2015 - Toronto Ontario

WE have lived through YEARS (well, since 2010) of construction around Union Station as the subway system did work on their platforms and the creation of a rapid train from Union Station to Pearson, our international airport.
What a treat to be able to walk on the street without all that construction chaos!

A new concourse hall was also created and unveiled a few weeks ago. Click here for some photos.

The work was required and the Pan Am games (opening this week) was definitely a driving force. Like most projects conducted by governments it is behind schedule on some items. Click here if you feel any interest in the revised timeline.

But onto more exciting things - food. Union Station has never been known for food, it mainly has the usual fast food outlets and for years not even many of them.

On July 6 they have launched an outdoor food market offering delicious new food options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A flower market (Tuesdays) and farmers' market (Wednesdays) will grace the new outdoor space as well. The bad news it is outdoors so the season won't be very long.

It is located on the newly named John A Macdonald plaza on Front St. outside the station.

I didn't try anything as it was later in the day.

This is just a sampling of the stalls, looking backward.

I went with John this week for lunch and more photos.

I had a delicious lobster roll from Off The Boat- a little pricey at $15 but it did come with fantastic fries as well.

John had three tacos from The Mad Mexican - verrrrry sloooooow service. By then I had finished my lunch.

He had two chicken and one pulled pork $12. He pronounced the pork the better. Only remembered to get a photo with one left.

  1. A whole lot of choices!

Union Station looks a lot better than when it did the last time I was in town. All that construction was crazy.

  2. We wondered whether it was a food market or flea market but we didn't investigate. There is still much work to be done within the station and along the UP Express line. We heard two different ways of saying UP, the two letters U and P and the other was just the up express. Which do you say?

    1. Yes, there is still a lot to be done but we've waited five years to be able to walk around the area that we are still pleased.

UP - I noticed myself saying Union to Pearson the other day but I've also said the two letters U and P.

  3. We Don't Chuck Around! LOLOLOL Anyway, what an awesome food market. It's one of the things I miss about living in a small town. On the other hand, we have 5 fantastic local-growers farmers markets in the area, so I really can't complain.

  6. How lovely! Thanks for showing us around. I saw a lobster corn dog on a board. Really? Seems like there are many new things to try and isn't it fun to see what kinds of names these type of eateries think up?

  10. Thanks for taking me on a mini-vacation this morning! The lobster roll did sound a bit pricy but looked like it had some serious lobster in it and a good roll. I hate when they are super mayonnaise-y and on a soggy hot dog bun.

  11. It looks like a good space! You'll have my foodie friends drooling over this one :) :) My husband is a fast eater and I have to be pretty snappy if I want a shot of his food. :) Many thanks for your company again!
