William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a composer and musician, known as the Father of the Blues. An African American, Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States. One of many musicians who played the distinctively American blues music, Handy did not create the blues genre and was not the first to publish music in the blues form, but he took the blues from a regional music style (Delta blues) with a limited audience to a new level of popularity.

Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.

W.C. Handy used the cigar counter to write out copies of the Beale Street blues for the band members.

Club Handy and the surrounding Handy Park are named in honor of W.C. Handy (William Christopher Handy).

Joseph Ortiz, a Pecos resident described as a dedicated city employee, was selected by the city and Veterans Association to paint a mural downtown representing the U.S. military. He said his son’s service in the Marine Corps helped inspire the design.

Walking “ten feet off of Beale” was meant as having an out-of-body experience walking down the main street of Memphis for the very first time.

“Hope Springs — The Wishing Well,” 4th and Main Streets By Whitney Olsen

This mixed-media art piece transforms MSD’s downtown flood pump station into a shimmery, underwater work of art.

I really wanted to try one! But the timing wasn't right. 

In the 1920's, The Brown Hotel drew over 1,200 guests each evening for its dinner dance. By the wee hours of the morning, guests would grow weary of dancing and make their way to the restaurant for a bite to eat. Sensing their desire for something more glamorous than traditional ham and eggs, Chef Fred Schmidt set out to create something new to tempt his guests' palates. His unique dish? An open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and a delicate Mornay sauce. The Hot Brown was born!
