The original name of the community was “Quaco”. Quaco is the Akan (Derivation of Mikmaq word Goolwagagek meaning haunt of the hooded seal).

 

The Quaco Museum tells the story of a thriving shipbuilding community that launched over 500 wooden sailing vessels. In the mid-19th century, St. Martins was one of the richest communities in the British Empire. 

St. Martins was settled in 1783 by a detachment of the King’s Orange Rangers– Loyalist soldiers from Orange and Duchess Counties, New York. The detachment had been posted to garrison duty in Nova Scotia at the end of hostilities in the American Revolution of 1776.

"Life is a rainbow road, multicoloured with the most brilliant hues and contrasting with the darkest tones. It is illuminated by the light of success, and rutted by the tracks of failure. Tears of sadness and joy wash its surface while the clouds of doubt and insecurity dapple its course. As we traverse this highway we can reach the highest pinnacles or descend to the darkest valleys.

Finally, when the end of the road is in sight, we may cast our eyes to the distant horizon where everything began; and say with conviction,
