Linking up with Marg at The Intrepid Reader
February 27, 2026 - Toronto ON
SATURDAY
This was pretty much our weekend.
I finally found a knitting pattern I want to try and even printed it off. I found some wool I like at Michael's online and get cash back from Rakuten, but I'd like to see it IRL first, so I'll go into the store during the week.
I was going to make this almond flour chocolate cake (gluten free) and so easy - I didn't have enough almond flour, added to shopping list.
SUNDAY
First order of the day was hockey, game started at 8:30 AM.
There were interesting comments on last week's post about analog (analogue) bags this morning. Then later in the morning I came across this - I couldn't get to the link as it is a paid subscription. Click here for an Insta reel.
Pic of some of the embroidery I have done.
And then...
Well, at least we got silver and class, which is a lot better than the fallout/disaster/misogyny/shame from the US Men's gold! Not to mention how the Canadian fans will react when some of those players have to return to their Canadian teams who pay them the big bucks!
Oh, poor Ottawa CANADA Senators captain (American) Brady Tkachuk unhappy with White House AI video that insulted Canadians!
The official White House social media account shared a video of USA hockey star Brady Tkachuk, calling Canadians “maple syrup eating f-cks”.
Well, that's what happens when you lie down with sick rabid pedos, you got used by .our self-serving POS POTUS.
It will be interesting to watch Saturday's NHL game in Toronto against the Senators, both captained by Americans who were on the US gold medal team.
I tidied the Tupperware drawer, not technically Tupperware, however. Wiped it down, got rid of odd lids. Moved the food processor shredders to the middle drawer. I wish I remembered to use these more.
Moved the heavy, rarely used pans to the bottom shelf and the wok, which is used often, to a higher shelf.
Garbage - restaurant chopsticks (we have enough nice ones), spice labels, old toothbrush, old lids, many (too) elastic bands, bread ties, plastic green glass.
Moved - Chinese spoons to bar.
So now this set of cabinets are done.
Since we had a late breakfast we had scones and tea in the afternoon, I am loving having frozen unbaked scones ready to eat in 30 minutes!
MONDAY
Monday Mural Toronto
I decided to check out the latest display at the Toronto Reference Library while John used the golf simulator downstairs. nursed a sore back.
He is loving his bamboo heating pad he bought in Vietnam. No cords, no batteries, no microwave, just add water!
Both of these can be seen in the Library's digital archives copy of the book, it is exquisite to see!
I see that this condo is almost finished, beside the library.
Welcome to refined living at Adagio by Menkes, a new luxury boutique condominium in Yorkville. Designed as an elegant modern retreat in the heart of the city and inspired by the distinguished history of the address. Blah, blah, blah.
The site features 202 residential units, a 14.7-metre excavation, and includes heritage preservation of existing street-level, 19th-century facade elements, incorporating a nearby, three-story historic building.
I knew that historic building as a Kitchen Plus store and before that I think, a Staples. That's the library on the far left.
Now this is what I wanted to know!!
Located on the southeast corner of Asquith Avenue, the property at 771 Yonge Street contains a three-storey commercial building that, according to archival records, was constructed in 1872 for property owner Elizabeth French and operated as a hotel by her husband, Joseph French. Following his death, a series of hostelries occupied the property, including the Langston House and the CPR Hotel. Among the occupants in the 20th century was Boris Volkoff’s first dance studio in Toronto. The property at 771 Yonge Street was included on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Property (now known as the Heritage Register) in 1984.
French’s Hotel is valued for its historical association with the Village of Yorkville (1853-1883), which was an independent municipality prior to its annexation by the City of Toronto. The subject building was part of the commercial district along Yonge Street that served the brickyards, breweries and related industries that formed the basis of the community. As a hotel in operation for more than 40 years, French’s Hotel was one of a selection of hostelries located near the key intersection of Yonge and Bloor streets where a tollgate once adjoined the boundary between Toronto and Yorkville.
The property at 771 Yonge Street is also valued as the location of the first dance studio in Toronto opened by the famed Russian-born dancer, choreographer, director and teacher, Boris Volkoff (1900-1974), who was revered as the “father of Canadian ballet.” With premises at 771 Yonge from 1930 to 1945 and while training innumerable dancers, Volkoff founded the Volkoff Canadian Ballet as the forerunner to a professional ballet company in Canada, and worked on co-productions with the Toronto Opera Company (forerunner of today’s Canadian Opera Company).
And I took a photo of that plaque in 2016!
The rentals are going for an astonishing low rate - 1 bedroom for $2,000 a month, in Toronto???
I went into the (new to me) Longo's at Yonge and Bloor for a couple of things. Yikes, those tomatoes were expensive, I hadn't paid any attention when I grabbed them, but they were good!
TUESDAY
Tuesday Treasures Toronto Reference Library exhibit.
On the way we scored some samples in Union.
We had lunch reservations at Libretto's Pizza on University, we found a new way underground so we didn't have to go outside for more than crossing Pearl St. as it was cold out.
John's gluten free.
I had the lunch special 10" with a truly delicious Caesar salad that we shared.
Citrus olive oil cake - first time trying it, loved it, now I have to make one!
WEDNESDAY
I had planned on going out but then decided that I really needed to get our laundry done.
3 loads of washing and 4 loads of drying got put away.
John ran some errands, trying to find the lightbulbs we need and finally resorted to Amazon.
I sorted the "bags" shelf, getting rid of 3, better than nothing! At least it is tidy now. We'll see how long it lasts!
We got a fraud alert on John's AMEX card so we had to deal with that, long story short, his new card is on its way. That's why we love AMEX!!
THURSDAY
I just went out for some groceries and other odds and ends.
Look at these tomatoes in Longo's!
My view at sunset, because I was too lazy to get up from my laptop.
FRIDAY
I met my BFF at noon for lunch, lobster rolls!! and we gabbed until 3:30!!
That was my day!
Thursday was downright freezing and Friday was a lovely day!

WATCHING
We finished the four seasons of Lincoln Lawyer.
We started watching (recorded) Devil in Disguise John Wayne Gacy The chilling story of one of the world's most notorious serial killers told through the words of Gacy himself, those who were forever changed by his unspeakable deeds and those who believe that the full truth remains concealed to this day. It has incredible reviews and we can see why!
Next Level Chef season 5 - our mindless entertainment. A social media "chef" who didn't know what kale looks like?
I'm now on season 3 of The Traitors UK, good kitchen time watching.
READING
I finished Trinity which I had read years ago and enjoyed, this time I found it rather tedious, perhaps because I know so much more about that time in Irish history now.
I read, and enjoyed Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl, the fashions and cosmetic history of that 1938 era into The States entering WW II. It is mainly the story of Estée Lauder, and she’s about to take the world by storm. It would have been more interesting hearing hearing the story from Lauder's point of view, rather than being filtered through the weaker character of her friend Gloria.
MAGAZINES
I learned a new embroidery stitch! Couching.
Dark tourism is an aspect of this fascination. It is the term given to a form of tourism that involves visiting sites and places that are associated with death, crime or tragedy in the past. Many visit such a site or place because of its historical significance, or because they want to learn from the experience, although there are undoubtedly some with a more ghoulish fascination with death or pain. There are a multitude of sites that can be described as dark tourism sites, as there’s so much of our history that has a darker hue.
British - afternoon tea with soup served in teacups, ham and marmalade sandwiches, scones and clotted
