A Slice of Cake

November 2016 - Toronto ON

Saturday morning was busy with cooking and cleaning for the noon birthday brunch for my niece's 30th.

John came back from picking up the birthday cake and asked what he could do. I said, slice the baguettes. OK where are they? I turned and pointed to where I had put them, in a grocery bag, to keep them fresh. No bag, no baguettes!! Turns out John assumed they were garbage and threw them out when he put out the other garbage. Emergency run to the bakery!

We served:
APPETIZERS
Goat cheese roasted garlic on baguettes
Pate
MAINS
Salad - brought by a guest
Baked ham
Au gratin potatoes
Roasted honey carrots
Chicken chili
Broccoli quiche
Homemade buns - delicious! Brought by salad guest also
DESSERTS
Birthday cake brought by niece's mom

Store bought red velvet cake.

I made sure everyone took some food home as it was we were eating leftovers for a while.

Sunday lazy day cleaning up and then heading to my cousin's for dinner.

The rest of the week went by in a blur. John golfed as the weather was gorgeous. I met my BFF for some shopping and then a good ole chinwag over lunch.
We went looking for and finally found wireless under cabinet lighting at Ikea after checking out all the typical hardware big box stores.
Friday we did a grocery shop for company on Saturday.

We went to the movies, Inferno, it was ok, a little disappointing. but enjoyed seeing places we have visited.

How could I forget the evening of and morning after spent watching the US elections? Very gracious speech.

Watching Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa.

The death of my favourite singer/writer/performer.

BOOKS

Reading City on Fire, an epic of 911 pages. Finally finished and a great read!
Started You.
When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

  2. Lovely looking birthday cakes! I hope everyone had a lovely time :) You sounds like a really good read and one I've never heard of before but the Toronto library has a bunch of copies so I'm putting it on hold. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. Hi! Fellow Torontonian! I had put a hold on it at the library and got it a month later.

  3. Your brunch menu looks wonderful. I read City On Fire and was disappointed, I felt it could have used a good editor.

  5. Mmmm....looks like a wonderful meal & celebration!

Funny, we had a similar incident with losing bananas this weekend! I know I bought 3 bananas at the store Friday night, but when I looked for them Sunday, we couldn't find them anywhere! Crazy.

    Have a good week -

  6. That is too funny (not) about the baguettes. Last night I went to look for the cherry tomatoes I bought at the grocery store ... there were nowhere to be found. I checked my store receipt. Ooops. I think I must have put those tomatoes in someone else's cart. Ooops!
