The new artistic mural entitled “Planet A” was inaugurated April 23, 2025 in Câmara de Lobos Bay. The work was created by the cultural collective Teatro Metaphora and reinforces the message of sustainability and protection of the planet, in one of the most emblematic areas of Madeira.

This mural joins other artistic initiatives of the association, known for using recycled materials and promoting environmental awareness through urban art.

Last look at the beach from our room.

Our airport pickup is not until 4:30 PM so after breakfast we headed back to Camara de Lobos.

Once again this driver took us into the middle of nowhere, but he finally understood we wanted to fishing village. Note to self - give a hotel address in town.

Winston, again, outside the Churchill Bay Pestana.

This is a gorgeous little town, if I came back for a few days, I would base myself here instead of the Orca. There is a lot to see and do walking around this town, with plenty of places to eat in the evening. Yes, it would cost a little more to Uber to Funchel but there is also a bus available.

We decide to share a cheese plate and it is huge!

No Ubers available so we cab back to the hotel 8€. We retrieve our luggage and wait (along with the French couple FC) in the lobby for our 4 PM airport ride which arrived at 3:45 for the 25 minute ride.

We were first in line for check-in when the gates opened.  We had to pay 50€ this time, for John's suitcase.
The French couple (FC) did self check-in so were anxious to know if we had a departure gate on our passes, no. They followed us to the gates and through security. John spoke to them in French, they were from Rouyn-Noranda QC.

Rouyn-Noranda is located on the western shore of Lake Osisko, 315 miles (507 km) northwest of Montreal city. Rouyn and its twin city, Noranda, originated in the 1920s when gold and copper ores were first exploited in the area. Rouyn was named after the sieur de Rouyn, a hero of the Battle of Sainte-Foy (1760), and became the administrative, commercial, and industrial centre for the whole mining region of western Quebec. Noranda, noted for its large copper smelter, amalgamated with Rouyn in 1986.

Then to the bar to wait for our 7:35 departure. I was chatting with one of my Montreal cousin's husband as they are in Europe too (Dublin - Faro - Lisbon) and today and tomorrow morning are the only time we could meet up. Our flight was delayed so we settled on 11 tomorrow morning.

Time to say goodbye to Madeira.

It was a bigger plane than on the way over, 3 seats aside, but luckily it wasn't full so John was able to take the aisle seat and we had to exit row. We finally landed and got our luggage by 9:30. As we exited the FC were waiting with our driver, who pointed at John with a big smile, he was our driver when we arrived in Lisbon 2 weeks ago!! We were going to the Pombal Hotel, where most of our group had stayed. The FC said they were going to Marques, where we stayed previously, it is only around the corner.

The driver took our baggage into the lobby and we checked in. FC suddenly appeared, it seems they misread the name of their hotel. They were leaving at 4 AM to fly home.
That is why I like to book my own flights!

Nice room, no water provided. But it overlooked the busy street so too noisy to leave the window open.

Madeira - Day 13

May 1 2025 - Madeira Portugal

Today is Dia do Trabalhador, Labour Day so not sure what will be open.

We lounged around our room until around 1 to see what the weather would do.

A change for breakfast.

Uber to Placa do Municipo $13.25. As we're waiting at the top of the hotel's driveway I look at John and ask where is his backpack? He ran down the hill as the car arrived. I asked the driver to wait a couple of minutes and she said she'd drive down to meet him.
She mentioned how bad the weather was yesterday for driving.

All the shops are closed. There is always a line up at a Nata7.

And just like that the sun came out! Everywhere is quiet, many cafes are not open.

On impulse we order some momos, a Tibetan dumpling. The sauce was delicious. I found a recipe.

More aimless strolling.
