Diner

2013 Russell's Truck Stop Glenrio New Mexico

Saturday, Christmas Day, we had a big breakfast, then spent time on Zoom calls with John's kids.
I made lemon mousse to bring to my cousin's for dessert.
We got to my cousin's house and spent a great evening, lots of food and laughs along with lots of kisses from this guy.

Oh yeah, there were other humans there!

Thanks, cuz, borrowed you Book of Faces photos.

Not impressed with his new little brother.

John cooked us a big breakfast the next morning that included white and black pudding!

We headed home around 1:30.

Click here for our Newfoundland and Labrador video!!

The rest of the week passed as stated above. John did have an eye appointment.

I placed and received our New Year grocery order for Thursday delivery. Weekend menu sorted!

I cleaned up the plants, feed them and watered.

We had a gorgeous sunset the other night. HINT it got more beautiful that may become a header.

We started the week in the cold with strong winds. How cold? Look at this town that was crystalized! This is Fort Erie ON.

And we ended the week with a temperature of 10C(50F) at 8 AM Friday!!

COOKING

Christmas Day - full turkey feast at my cousin's.
I made Mexican chocolate shortbread to take with us. I used the Cup4Cup flour and it made 36. Needs more chili. John says it's not a keeper, he preferred the lemon shortbread recipe.

Monday Boxing Day we had my turkey leftovers, so no real cooking involved.

Tuesday - still a holiday- we finished the turkey with French fries and peas and gravy.

Wednesday the last of the mashed potatoes, cauliflower, turnips and carrots became lunch fritters.
You can do this with any leftover vegetables.

By now, even I was ready for a pasta dinner. I made carbonara with the bacon from Farm Boy.
I used this pasta, not even sure where I bought it.

With this wine.

The turkey carcass has become soup. I made a small pot of soup with carrots, celery and onions for Thursday, the rest I froze.

Thursday made these shortbread cookies, I had a broken egg in my grocery delivery. I decorated some with maraschino cherries and others with chocolate, sea salt and coconut. These broke up really easily.
But the dough felt great!

BBQ chicken thighs, roast potatoes and carrots.

Friday steak baked potato and broccolini.

WATCHING

We watched both Home Alone movies and Castaway. It's not Christmas without Home Alone!!

On Tuesday we declared a pajama, popcorn and movie afternoon and "bought" Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick. We had seen the original and didn't really remember it. Then we watched The Outfit that John had pvr'ed. The Outfit is a 2022 American psychological crime drama thriller film. The film stars Mark Rylance who leads an ensemble cast including Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O'Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Simon Russell Beale. Rylance plays an English cutter who works at a tailor shop in Chicago, whose primary customers are a family of vicious gangsters.  This had you on the edge of your seat, it is so riveting.
P.S. I was knitting throughout these movies!

We decided to watch the series The White Lotus, I wasn't sure we would like it. However, we both got involved. We finished season 1 set in Hawaii and now on season 2 in Sicily.
The White Lotus is an American black comedy-drama anthology television series It follows the guests and employees of the fictional White Lotus resort chain, whose stay is affected by their various psychosocial dysfunctions.

Best commercial of the season! Brought tears to both of us!

READING

I finished The Favor, I loved it and was cheering the protagonist on!! No spoilers.

  1. I clicked on the link for the crystalized town and wow! I wonder how anyone could even open a door with so much ice. Recently I finished Not Dark Yet, Peter Robinson's last published book. I was planning to skip it as it has Zelda in it but since there is only one more of the Banks' books, I went ahead and read it. Meh...

  2. What a fun time you had! I bet you wanted to take that fellow home after all those kisses.

I'm looking forward to seeing that photo as a header.

A poem for the New Year:

"Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
    The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true...

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
    And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
    With sweeter manners, purer laws...

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
    The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good."

    A toast:

And here's to a year of nothing but good books!

  3. If there aren't children around for Christmas, dogs are the next best thing.
The ice houses are amazing. My, what nature can do.
Pleasing that the holiday season did not interrupt your Friday steak night.
