Weekend Cooking

Weekend Cooking is open to anyone who has any kind of food-related post to share: Book (novel, nonfiction) reviews, cookbook reviews, movie reviews, recipes, random thoughts, gadgets, quotations, photographs. If your post is even vaguely foodie, feel free to grab the button and link up anytime over the weekend. You do not have to post on the weekend. Please link to your specific post, not your blog's home page.

I posted other food related photos this week, shrimp stand on the highway, Mazatlan food market, Malpica bakery.

Last week I posted about the Shrimp Ladies of Mazatlan. I promised that we were going to go back and buy some shrimp and have them cooked in a local restaurant. On Thursday we did that.

it was fun selecting which lady to buy from (the first one that actually spoke to us), selected our shrimp after she pointed out the prices, 120, 140, 150 pesos a kilo (equal to 2.2 pounds). We didn't negotiate but I suppose you could. It wasn't quite a kilo when she weighed them but it was enough and cost 126 pesos about $12.

I confirmed with her that we could take them to a restaurant Dunia around the corner to have them cooked and she said yes and also pointed to the place across the street that would do them as well. They had a huge sign showing the various ways they could do them for you.

We opted for Dunia as I had read about it.

We headed over, handed our bag to the waitress and sat down. She asked garlic? We said yes and ordered a couple of beers. She brought the beers and lime (de reguer in Mexico).

She then brought a delicious salsa, which hardly had any tomato but a lot of cilantro.

And then our shrimp served with tortillas! Absolutely delicious but I think she forgot the garlic!

I'm posting at The View From Here this week.

My husband snapped this photo from our tour van as we were driving to Malpica Mexico on Tuesday. There are many roadside vendors along the highway from Mazatlan selling dried shrimp. Pricing appeared to be standard.

Saturday Photo Hunting

Keyhole Pictures this week's theme is AN ACTION SHOT.

While in Malpica Mexico on Tuesday I was "selected" by our tour guide to "assist" Jorge the tile maker.

The tiles are made from sand, cement and water. The clay/mud mixture is put in these shapes and the designs are created using the eraser end of a pencil. This is me in action!.

Jorge then uses a hand turned machine to "squeeze" the water out and then the tile is left to dry for 17 hours. This is my tile, I would have bought it but it wasn't dry enough.

Saturday Snapshot

Saturday Snapshots is hosted by Alyce at At Home With Books.

We took a day tour to some small Mexican towns on Tuesday. These towns are a world apart from Mazatalan. Malpica was the first town and I was fascinated by the church from the moment I saw it from the bus.
Malpica is a small sleepy town with only 700 residents.

The Stations of the Cross were very intriguing. They were a mixture of various styles.

Mazatlan Market

We went into town yesterday and went to the Mercado or market, Jose Maria Pino Suarez located i the Centro part of town just two blocks away from the Cathedral.

I love these markets, no shrink wrap, no Styrofoam just lots of fresh produce.

But first...a new portrait of us...I got a little pink in the sun!

Malpica

We visited this town this week and stopped into the bakery. I am posting more about this town tomorrow. Two pieces of pastry was 10 pesos or less than a dollar and they were so good we were annoyed the next morning not to have stocked up!!
