Roadside Snacks

December 2016 - Toronto/Montreal/On the road to Florida

Where has this year gone? We were in Montreal for the weekend then back home on Monday and Tuesday, and then we leave on our annual winter getaway on Wednesday.

Saturday on the road

We spent Saturday evening with family.

Sunday we had 2 grandkids over at the hotel for a swim and lunch.

My fish tacos at lunch.

Then we had other family come to the hotel for a great dinner in the restarant.

Monday! What a difference a night makes! We woke to some snow but by the time we pulled into the road at 9AM this was our drive.
This is the traffic going into Montreal, thank goodness, we are heading westward, home.

KFC in Quebec.

A couple of hours later near Kingston.

It's only 4 PM and traffic is already building leaving Toronto.

Home Sweet Home! A 7 hour drive.

Tuesday I had lunch with a friend and then we got all our packing done and the place cleaned as we will have family house-sitting for us.

Wednesday we are on the road by 9AM, car is loaded. Weather was great, a little gloomy going through New York but the sun came out again. Snow on the ground, on and off, depending on the elevation.

Leaving Toronto behind.

Buffalo and area are gearing up for a storm later this week.

A coffee break.

We were checked into the Hampton Inn Altoona PA as Hilton,s Honors members we were upgraded to a suite and received our complimentary snacks and water.

We walked to dinner at Champs. We had stayed here in October when we were returning from Williamsburg.

Thursday and we are on the road after our complimentary breakfast at Hampton. It was sunny but still quite cold.

Green and blue!

Time for a lunch break.

We take a quick brisk walk around Roanoke VA.

9-foot-tall columns sculpted to represent Roanoke and each of its seven sister cities:Wonju, Korea; Kisumu, Kenya; Pskov, Russia; Florianopolis, Brazil; Opole, Poland; Lijiang, China; and St. Lo, France.

We got to the Hilton Garden Inn around 3PM and settled in. At check-in we were given complimentary breakfast coupons for tomorrow!

They have a restaurant so that was dinner solved. Unfortunately it was the worst Garden Inn restaurant we have dined in. To start, the server had no idea how to serve a bottle of wine. I had the fish and chips which were thin filets of cod so heavily battered and deep fried to a crisp. John said his ribs were just dry and awful.

Friday at breakfast they only had one server and that wasn't fair for her.
However, as always, when I mentioned the dinner service I was given a full credit. Hilton is always amazing in meeting their 100% satisfaction promise.
It was only 25F or -4C when we got in the car at 8:45.

We stopped at J.R.'s new location in Mooresville  NC so John could get some cigars.

It was 50F or 10C at 3PM and we didn't need our coats!
After a trip to Wal-Mart for some cheeses and other needs we settled into the Hampton Inn for the evening.
Dinner was cheeses and crackers and wine.

Three Martini Lunch was good, not memorable. I did enjoy the background history of the late 1950s in New York.

No other reading done .

Weekend Snapshots

  1. There's no shortage of BBQ in the States. I hope the winter trip is good for you!

  2. You covered quite a few kilometres as you fled the weather. Bake shop seems an odd way to say bakery. Altoona rang a bell for me.

  3. That's a whole lot of driving. Have a great week. Cheers from Carole's Chatter

  4. It's a long trip, but I can see why you make it! It's a shame about food on the road sometimes.

  5. Great photos of some of the East coast of North America. Never been to that side. Loved the snow photo with traffic and those historical country statues. Love historical. Have a great time with your family.

  6. I agree about Three Martini Lunch -- but because I'm an editor, I thought it was fun. Lucky you to be headed away from the snow. Love all the sights on your trip south. And Good for Hilton for making things right.

    1. I thought it was a fun read, seems I've been stuck in 1950-60s New York in my last few reads.
Looks like we just beat the weather!

  7. i enjoyed following your trip and i love the soda shop building in roanoke...for some reason i've never posted a picture of it! i hope next time the weather is better here so you can stay a bit, and definitely let me know ahead of time!
