July 2014 - Toronto ON
When we were in the Distillery District last week we happened upon this display entitled LOVE. There is a world wide prevalence of love locks being attached to bridges or fences.
We first saw this in Strasburg Austria.
A love lock or love padlock is a padlock which sweethearts lock to a bridge, fence, gate, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They are often treated by municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and there is some cost to their removal.
There is even a website called My Love Padlock.
You can even find them in Toronto on the Humber Bay bridge.
I happen to like this piece of art.

I like it a lot!
ReplyDeleteBetter here than on the bridges, I think.
ReplyDeleteIf this is a piece of art that people have access to and can add locks to it, imagine how great that's going to look when all different colorful locks are covering it and the whole thing spells out love. I love that! I hope it's strong enough... ;-)
