Eh to Zed

For this round of the alphabet I am going to celebrate Canada's 150 birthday by showcasing towns across the county.
To date I've been in the Maritimes with my letters.

This week's letter is

Today I'm in Toronto, what's that to do with the letter E?

We actually like in an area formerly called Etobicoke.

Etobicoke (with a silent 'ke') is an administrative district and former city that makes up the western part of the city of Toronto. Etobicoke was first settled by Europeans in the 1790s; the municipality grew into city status in the 20th century. Several independent villages and towns developed within the area of Etobicoke, only to be absorbed later into Etobicoke during the era of Metro Toronto. Etobicoke was dissolved in 1998, when it was amalgamated with other Metro Toronto municipalities into the City of Toronto. Etobicoke is bordered on the south by Lake Ontario, on the east by the Humber River, on the west by Etobicoke Creek, the city of Mississauga, and Toronto Pearson International Airport (a small portion of the airport extends into Etobicoke), and on the north by Steeles Avenue West.

Knocked a Toronto landmark off our bucket list - drinks at the Library Bar in the Royal York Hotel. The bar opened in 1929!

  2. Thank you, Jackie. Before this morning I hadn't heard of Etobicoke. Do your townd assimilated into Toronto still keep their identity and some government as do the five boroughs of our New York City? The murals are nice as is the Montgomery Inn. Old bars make for an interesting visit.
Thank you again. I'll be waiting for the next highlighted Canadian town.

    1. Yes, Jim, they tend to maintain their own identity. When filling out forms online some sites will insist on me using Etobicoke rather than Toronto which it should be.
Rapper Drake provided the nickname for his hometown of Toronto as We, the 6 when he released the album: Views from the 6.The 6 – sometimes written as The 6ix or The Six refers to Old Toronto, East York, North York, York, Etobicoke, and Scarborough which were amalgamated into Toronto.

  3. Thanks, Jackie. I also looked Etobicoke up on Wikipedia. You were more interesting than they.

  4. Great pictures as always - I love the fountain. Is that on the U of T campus? Looks like campus buildings in the background. I think my favourite shot is the tortoise sculpture. Etobicoke was a good choice for E. I had wondered if you might do Ecum Secum from the maritimes, given its odd name. There is definitely more to see in Etobicoke!

  5. The murals must be something to see in person. I like the look of stone on Montgomery Inn. Thanks for sharing.

  7. What an interesting historic location. I am amazed at how long some cities have been around. Love the mural. Congratulations on ticking that item off the bucket list. Thanks so much for joining Friday's Hunt. Have a great rest of the week!
