Jinks

Queen St. W Toronto

Saturday November 5 and it's that time of year again.

I liked getting that extra hour! The weekend weather was much warmer than it should be, no complaints here.
Early sunset.

We did our usual favourite things as we do on weekends. Chores got done, plants got watered.
I met a friend for her birthday.

Winds have knocked some all of the leaves down.

Monday sunrise.

John golfed on Thursday, we have never had such warm sunny weather in November. The temperature reached 20C!

Ski hats in a store, mask is referring to a ski mask.

Cranes downtown.

Friday brought rain and fog. John had some appointments but didn't get too wet.
He saw the doctor again, about his hip/groin pain. This has been going on since February and nothing shows on the MRI, other than age. He's had a summer of physio, but our trip to NL seems to have aggravated it. Finally he is being referred to a sports specialist and getting another MRI done. Other than that his recent blood work was good.

I am working on reducing the pantry stockpiles of canned goods. Using up, not replacing is working.
Not an exciting week, but sometimes that's just fine!

COOKING

Saturday
I baked gluten free ginger cream muffins, I had to scrape the molasses carton (why is it in a carton?) to get enough. I think the amount of cream cheese is a bit much and didn't add the powdered sugar to the cheese either. The tops got a bit too hard. We're not sure if they are a keeper. Not a keeper, too dry and not much flavour. So bad, I didn't even make an effort, they went right into the garbage.
I made these gluten free biscuits for Saturday dinner. Meh. John asked why I don't stick to my tried and true recipes. That would be boring.
Chicken Divan for dinner.

Sunday
I decided to bake my old faithful Mexican chocolate cookies. It makes four dozen so we should be good for a while.
Hamburgers

Monday
I baked gluten free cranberry pecan bars definitely a keeper.
I used a very ripe banana for the egg which made it too wet so I added more almond flour. Perhaps the base could be graham crackers. That said, I put it in the fridge and it set well. We had it for breakfast with yogurt. Would also be good with ice cream or whipping cream.

Liver and mashed potatoes, carrots and turnips with fried onions.

Tuesday
I made a chicken soup with quinoa for lunch, stock was frozen.
Fish chowder and crackers

Wednesday
Air fryer buttermilk fried chicken with kale/spinach salad and goat cheese. John really liked the chicken.

Thursday
Pork chops mashed potatoes and beans

Friday
Made a pot of ham and bean soup with kale.
Steak, loaded baked potato with broccolini

WATCHING

So last week I started watching season 6 of Great Canadian Bake Off, season 12 of British BO, and found season 6 of Australian BO on YouTube! Perfect when I'm knitting.

Vatican Girl - The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlalndi is a Vatican teenager who mysteriously disappeared while returning home from a flute lesson in Vatican City on 22 June 1983. Sightings of Orlandi in various places have been reported over the years, including inside Vatican City, but all have been unreliable. The disappearance of Orlandi sparked an intense media frenzy in Italy that has resulted in the case being called “Italy’s most famous unsolved mystery”, as well as marking one of the few known disappearances of a Vatican citizen.
I always like stories of the Church's coverups of their nefarious actions.

We watched last episode of The Handmaid's Tale season 5.

We watched The TakeoverFramed for murder after uncovering a privacy scandal, an ethical hacker must evade the police while trying to track down the criminals blackmailing her.

The Good Nurse is a 2022 American crime drama film. It is based on the 2013 true-crime book of the same name by Charles Graeber about Charles Cullen, a serial killer who murdered patients in hospitals while working as a nurse.

This Is the Night is a 2021 American drama film, a fun coming of age/coming out movie not to be taken seriously.
In 1982, as all of Staten Island anticipates the opening of a blockbuster boxing movie, an Italian-American family must confront its greatest challenges. In the end, the family realizes that the only way to live is like there's no tomorrow.

The Contractor is a 2022 American action thriller film. Involuntarily discharged from the Army, a special forces sergeant lands a contract with a private underground military force.

READING

You might want to check out this book - The Sleeping Car Porter - winner of the 2022 Giller Prize.

The Rumor was an okay read, it didn't really engage me as the main character annoyed me.

The Girl You Lost I really enjoyed the twists and turns (some unrealistic) and didn't see the ending coming!

The Lying Wife - started out slowly for me, I didn't/don't like Carrie. The last line in the book confirms to me that she seriously needs her meds.

I started While You Were Sleeping, another Kathryn Croft.

Check this out!

  1. Your photos from the high perspective of your condo are always fun to see. We have lost most of the leaves too, though until today it’s been pretty warm. I think winter is setting in this weekend.

    Have a good week… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

  2. Why not stick to what you cook so well and know, is a question I often ask. Maybe the cookbook would be good for a novice like me.

  3. That meme about DST is exactly how I feel about it, lol. I wish we'd move forward an hour and then never go back. :D

I've been wanting to watch The Good Nurse. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to it sooner rather than later. There's always so much to watch and read.

    Have a good week!

  5. I like to try new recipes, too, but I often change things up as I'm baking and I forget to write down the changes.

The sunset is stunning. The time change in the fall is much easier than the one in the spring, but...why?

I am looking for The Sleeping Car Porter, but it hasn't really shown up a lot around my part of the world. Now that it has won the prize, maybe it will pop up more.

  7. I see what you mean about the Copycat Crackerbarrel recipe I made reminding you of your chicken divan recipe!

I'm still thinking about that last scene in the last episode of Handmaid's Tale!!! Can't wait to see what happens next. I hope it's not a long wait.
