During a traditional screech-in, come from aways — or CFAs — are supposed to recite an age-old saying, eat a piece of bologna (also known as a Newfoundland steak), kiss a cod and then take a shot of Screech rum to wash it all down.

Newfoundland is also famous for its Viking history. Newfoundland is currently recognized as the original settling point for Nordic explorers who set foot in the America’s over 400 years before Christopher Columbus. And there is no better place to experience this than on the Viking Trail.

It is a destination highway that leads you from the beautiful Town of Deer Lake, through Gros Morne National Park, to the French Shore, a Gateway to Labrador and to Vinland (home of the Vikings).

The traditional boundary of the VTTA includes from the Town of Deer Lake to communities north on the Viking Trail Highway including all routes serviced by route 430, and the Labrador Straits from L’Anse aux Clair to Battle Harbour.

The region is home to three World UNESCO Heritage Sites.
