Day 16 - Twillingate to Eastport

Sep 19 Twillingate  to Eastport 196 KM

The map above was the plan, but we wanted to drive along the coast.
Revised time 3 hr 46 min 298 km

Breakfast in Twillingate at the café across the street.

The winds were gone and it was a lovely day.

We are soon driving along the water.

They were out for a Sunday drive.

Stretching our legs.

The town of Gambo is proud to be the birthplace of Joey Smallwood, former Premier of Newfoundland and last father of confederation. Newfoundland was the last province to join Confederation in 1948 or as the Newfoundlanders like to say :Canada joined Newfoundland".

Bathroom break in Gambo.
Painted like the flags of Newfoundland and Labrador. On the left is the official flag. On the right is the pink, white and green tricolour flag, or PWG, that can be seen all around Newfoundland and Labrador. There is a deluge of clothing and accessories emblazoned with the flag, usually accompanied by the slogan "Republic of Newfoundland." It has been asserted in the media and on the internet that it has represented the island for some 200 years. Yet Newfoundland was never a republic, and the PWG was never an official or republican flag. That it represents independence to some today is a product of the province's troubled post-Confederation history. As with many traditions and symbols that appear to be ancient, the PWG is not. Rather it is a late 19th century product which took the place of an earlier tricolour flag that has been forgotten.

Ranging from rugged and challenging coastal trails to leisurely strolls along beaches and through historic communities, the Damnable Trail network on the Eastport Peninsula has a trail for each level of hiker experience and difficulty. The High Tide Trail links the Eastport beach and the Northside Beach, the Old School House Trail links Happy Adventure and Sandy Cove, the Salvage Trails, and the Coastal Ridge Trail. Spectacular coastal scenery, fascinating geology, beaches and more.
Considering what I now know about moose and bear, I wouldn't be walking into the woods.

Terra Nova National Park is located on the east coast, along several inlets of Bonavista Bay. The park takes its name from the Latin name for Newfoundland; it is also the original Portuguese name given to the region.

Named for the infamous pirate Peter Easton, the name Happy Adventure supposedly resulted from a successful outing of seeking and receiving shelter in the community’s harbour. This quiet community was permanently settled in 1868. The first recorded settlement was as early as 1710, with 2010 marking its 300th anniversary.

We were looking for the Happy Adventure Inn at No. 8. We drove up twice, checked every house number to no avail. Then we spotted it in behind another house!

The Inn interior and our room was spectacular. More photos to come in my Friday recap.
