Sep 6 Edmundston NB to Fredericton NB to Moncton NB
WEATHER Foggy to sunshine TEMP 8C (46F) to 25C (77F)
FIRST POST WITH NEW LAPTOP
We had a good breakfast (not included) and headed out at 8:40 and it was chilly. The air was smelly from the paper mills in the area.
In New Brunswick all signs are bilingual.
Speed limit is 110 km.
We took a detour to Florenceville - Bristol for a break based on it being the French Fry Capital of the world!
Florenceville was originally known as Buttermilk Creek. In 1855 it was renamed Florenceville to honour Florence Nightingale, the famous Crimean War nurse. Florenceville was on the west side of the Saint John River and there the first post office and commercial section of the village was situated. In later years East Florenceville, previously known as Buckwheat Flats, became the commercial centre with five grocery stores and several other small businesses. This lead us to some back roads to get back on the highway.
We saw these odd webby thingies in the trees, we didn't get a photo by Google provided one.
Tent caterpillars are readily recognized because they are social, colorful, diurnal and build conspicuous silk tents in the branches of host trees.Covered Bridge Potato Chip company.
We decided to go to Fredericton, not on our plan, to buy a new laptop as mine had an accident in Edmundston! We decided it would also be a good spot for a break.
Fredericton is the provincial capital. An important cultural, artistic, and educational centre for the province, Fredericton is home to two universities, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and cultural institutions such as the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the Fredericton Region Museum, and The Playhouse, a performing arts venue.
We decided to go to the historic Garrison District, a National Historic Site since 1964, and Provincial Historic Site since 1965.
First stop, lunch.
Then a short walk before heading back to the car.
The Fredericton Lighthouse is a faux lighthouse on the bank of the St. John River in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was constructed in 1989 and has never served as an official aid to navigation. It is near the historic Garrison District in downtown Fredericton. Originally privately built, it has been operated by the Fredericton Tourism Bureau since 2002.Fredericton's City Hall, built in 1876, is the oldest one still in use in the Maritimes. Visitors are welcomed to the City at the Visitor Information Centre located in the lobby, and can tour the Council Chamber, see the restored clockworks and a series of commemorative tapestries which are on permanent display. *Until 1952, the square in front of the building was used as a public farmers' market.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the 2nd floor was used as an Opera House, and was the entertainment center of the city.
The clock is hand wound every day. The hands are 8 ft. long and made out of copper.
In 2013, the fountain in front of City Hall was restored to its original 3-tiered height. The cherub atop the fountain is affectionately known by locals as Freddy the Nude Dude, although his formal title is Putto with Fish.
Back on the road to Moncton and checked into the Hilton Garden Inn, a great hotel!
Moncton is the most populous city in New Brunswick.
Although the Moncton area was first settled in 1733, Moncton was officially founded in 1766 with the arrival of Pennsylvania German immigrants from Philadelphia. Initially an agricultural settlement. It was named for Lt. Col. Robert Monckton, the British officer who had captured nearby Fort Beauséjour a century earlier.

There's some good architecture out there.
