Weekend Roundup

Welcome to The Weekend Roundup...hosted by Tom The Back Roads Traveler
Skywatch Friday

1. Starts with "G."
2. A Favorite
3.  Great

For the letter of the week for this round I am going to go with all things TTC, Toronto Transit Corporation.

Starts with "G"

There are only two stations starting with G. I had never been to Glencairn so I took a ride there this week. Nothing exciting about this one, in fact. the whole place is under renovation.

The station opened in 1978 in what was then the Borough of North York. It was part of the subway line extension from St. George to Wilson station.

Glencairn was designed by Adamson Associates. A central vaulted glass roof spans the length of the station, allowing the penetration of natural light to all areas of the station during the day and to be seen at night as a long illuminated strip of light.

The glass roof is directly above the single centre platform. This is similarly to Yorkdale station, where the interior walls of the station at platform level are unfinished concrete, with curved sections over the tracks to form a lower ceiling. Unlike Yorkdale, the curve is less sudden making the walls more rounded in appearance and they are clad with white horizontal panels between vertical concrete "ribs", along with a wider orange panel strip displaying the station name. Platform level seating is sheltered within glass walls.

These are being replaced. I can only imagine the state of this station during last week's rain storm!

Glencairn formerly featured a multi colour stained glass skylight entitled Joy designed by Rita Letendre, which was removed at the artist's request after it became faded, and replaced with clear glass. Once the skylight is refurbished; the artwork is planned to be reinstated at that time.

FAVOURITE

Not quite TTC but is local transportation accessible from the subway.

.

GO Transit carried 68.5 million passengers in 2017, and its ridership continues to grow.

GREAT

Two Gs.The Great Gretzky

Wayne Douglas Gretzky CC (born January 26, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Nicknamed "The Great One", he has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" by many sportswriters, players, and the league itself. Gretzky is the leading scorer in NHL history, with more goals and assists than any other player. He garnered more assists than any other player scored total points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, Gretzky tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999 and persisting through 2017, he holds 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records.

  1. Your trains are rather unique and very recognisable to me. It's a pity I could not investigate your public transport more, aside from a couple of tram rides and the airport train. Overseas local public transport is not of great interest to my partner. We did find ourselves swamped by commuters early one morning at the corner of York Street and Front Street W and joined many of them at the Tim Horton's coffee queue.

    1. I am enjoying investigating our subway system. I have not been to many of these stations further north so it is an adventure. I am lucky that John humours my peculiar jaunts.
York and Front is where our shuttle (provided by the condo) stops so I have to struggle through those rush hour swamping.

  2. I'm amazed how you can come up with a subway that starts with the appropriate letters. Love seeing your posts. Most interesting. Would love to see the renovation after the artwork is reinstalled. Wayne Gretzky was an amazing hockey player. Enjoyed your post! Happy Saturday.
