Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read

• Open to a random page

• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I am in transit today so I scheduled my post ahead of time on a book I read a week ago.

My selection this week is from The Betrayal of Trust by Susan Hill.

Her bedroom curtains were always left slightly open and she could see lights in the windows of the two houses opposite. People would be awake tonight up making tea, checking windows, hoping there were no slipped tiles on the roof.

My selection this week is from Girls Fall Down by Maggie Helwig.

People come here from summer countries and learn to be winter people. But there are worse fates. That is exactly why many of them come here, because there are far worse fates than winter.

Waiting for Sunrise by William Boyd

It's a vegetable soup, a great big stinking salad. Not to mention the Italians or the Ukrainians.

I'm currently reading and completely enjoying it!
Other People's Money: A Novel

Here's my teaser:

"He hates charity dinners, with all that bonhomie and the childish showoff auctions and those terrible jokey speeches. Dickens described financiers of his time at a charity dinner: sleek, slobbery, bow-paunched, overfed, apoplectic, snorting cattle."

Here's mine from The Templar Salvation that I started last week and am still reading:
And if not now,  if not during his lifetime or the lifetimes of many of his descendants, there  would come a time when they would be read and studied openly. A time when they would enrich man's understanding of his past.

Here's mine from Ghost Light by Joseph O'Connor that I read last week:
And had he lived beyond his youth, the years would have contracted, because a married couple become the same age, grow to resemble one another over time, like bookends, their recollections in greyed bindings between them and neither bothering to read what once divided them. What's this he'd be now?

Whatever You Love

My teaser:
%*&$, I  thought, exhaustedly, I am tormented by metaphors. They have infested my home like the nits Betty brought back from nursery - just when you think you've got rid of the bastards, you find another one. Why does mayonnaise go translucent when it gets warm? Am I the only one who finds that sinister?

Great House

Only one sentence today, so as not to give anything away.

I didn't like sitting on the edge of the tub or standing at the sink with one knee to my ear, watching the black dirt swirl in the white porcelain, but it was one of those countless things one does in life to avoid an argument, and the thought of it made me want to laugh or possibly choke.

The Winter Ghosts

"Try again, Freddie," she said.
And in those three quiet words, three simple words, somehow there was a promise of an entire life to be lived if I could only that the chance.

Rather, one believes that there is a guardian angel standing by who will come to the rescue when push comes to shove. When Karl says he has left me and the children for the Dumpling, the Angel will surely rewind time.
