Le Neuf Cafe - Patisserie

July 2022 - Toronto ON

John went for physio.
We sorted through all the USBs that we found and cleaned them up - all reformatted and a couple thrown out. I also cleaned the camera flash cards that don't fit our current cameras. I put them on the local Buy Nothing FB page, but no bites.
The usual timewasters (laundry, cleaning, etc) took place. I usually do laundry on the weekend as rates are lower.
And of course, The Open was on so John was totally dedicated all weekend.
Traffic was awful as the Honda Indy was here which meant a section of Lake Shore was closed.
Sunday is my book blogger readings to top up my already loooong TBR list. And then there is the New York Times book recommendations. And I "had" to buy a cookbook, see below.
Monday was our first rainy foggy day in a long time so after I baked we watched a movie with popcorn and a coke.
Wednesday John golfed and I went downtown. Looked in Winners - nada. Picked up some groceries.

Thursday we both went for manicures and pedicures early.

Friday John golfed. I left early and went downtown wandering, did some errands and picked up sushi for lunch.

Saturday we are driving to Montreal to visit family, home on Monday.

COOKING
Saturday BBQ chicken quarters, roast potatoes and carrots and broccolini.

Sunday Mexi mini meatloaf with potato cauliflower cheese mash

Monday I baked blueberry breakfast crumb cake except I used cranberries and lemon with gluten free flour.
Dinner was burgers and chips

Tuesday chicken a la orange

Wednesday salmon and kale salad

Thursday with no ideas on what to make we had steak and fries.

Friday our usual steak and baked potato.

WATCHING

I watched a Youtube video Spadina 1984, a fascinating history of Spadina Ave. in Toronto done in 1984.
This video is a documentary film by David Troster that documents the history of the Jewish community in Toronto, specifically the Spadina and Kensington Market neighbourhoods. The video incorporates interviews with members of the community, archival moving image and still footage, and Troster's narration.

I started recording/watching the latest season of Grantchester on PBS.

I watched Top of the Lake, a mystery drama television series created and written by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee. Elizabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman, Holly Hunter, Tom Wright appear in it.

We watched The Longest Night 2022 - Armed forces surround a Spanish psychiatric prison in order to abduct an incarcerated serial killer — but aren't prepared for the battle that ensues. Excellent dubbing.

Blue Bayou is a 2021 American drama film written and directed by Justin Chon.
As a Korean-American man raised in the Louisiana bayou works hard to make a life for his family, he must confront the ghosts of his past as he discovers that he could be deported from the only country he has ever called home.
This was a good teary bur so frustrating movie. If you hate injustice, racism, and redneck cops don't watch this.
I will never hear this song again without thinking of this movie.

You Don't Know Me is a four-part British series. NOW we need a second series!!

The Serpent is a British crime drama eight-part limited series. It is based on the crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who murdered young tourists from 1975 to 1976.
Hotchand Bhawnani Gurumukh Charles Sobhraj (born 6 April 1944) is a French serial killer, fraudster, and thief, who preyed on Western tourists traveling the hippie trail of South Asia during the 1970s. He was known as "the Bikini Killer" due to the attire of several of his victims, as well as "the Splitting Killer" and "the Serpent", due to “his snake-like ability to avoid detection by authorities".
It is thought that Sobhraj murdered at least 20 tourists in South and Southeast Asia, including 14 in Thailand. He was convicted and jailed in India from 1976 to 1997. After his release, he retired, promoting his infamy in Paris. Sobhraj later returned to Nepal in 2003, where he was arrested, tried, and received a life sentence.

READING

Here's a book written by a woman in our building, The Loving Touch of Piano Man.

An interesting article in Toronto Life about a Toronto teen who became a star author on Wattpad.
Jessica Cunsolo started anonymously publishing her stories on Wattpad when she was in high school, quickly developing a legion of loyal readers. While still in university, she completed her first novel and signed a three-book deal with the online reading platform. Now, Cunsolo is a full-time writer, and her YA series is being adapted for television.

I read Perfect Little Children by Sophie Hannah and started another of hers The Next to Die.

I flipped through Market Restaurant + Bar Cookbook: Seasonally Inspired Cuisine from Southern California, an impulse selection at the library. The book has many intriguing cocktails with unusual ingredients - blood orange Hemingway. The recipes are grouped by season.
The photos are gorgeous! Recipes sublime!
I like the idea of adding lemon juice to sour cream to top a broccoli soup that also contains spinach.
There are some interesting salad recipes. Fall pear salad and aged goat cheese soufflé sounds divine, but I'm afraid to make a soufflé!
Oh yes - cast iron seared yellowtail and crispy shrimp tempura! Maine lobster and seafood chowder!
Even his takes on ordinary dishes like grilled steak and twice cooked potatoes or braised lamb shanks have an extra level to them.
AND the desserts!
OKAY I ordered the book!

  1. Sounds like a quiet week, which is always welcome. Thanks for the viewing recommendations; I've added several to my list. My library doesn't own the cookbook; I'm putting it on to buy list based on your recommendation. Looks really good.

  4. Steak two days in a row. You must be rich.
I think we saw Top of the Lake a few years ago. I can't really remember it.
Yes, I think the name soufflé strikes terror to many hearts. It can't be that hard. Give it a shot.

  6. How fun it is to read a book by someone you know. Sometimes I think libraries are just the devil's temptations for us readers. I see a book and check it out and like it so much I have to have a copy.

I'm sorry I didn't have the linkup up when you came by. Sometimes I forget to add it until I'm reminded.

    Enjoy your visit with family!
