Tuesday Treasures

Tom hosts Tuesday's Treasures.

February 1980 - Montreal to Florida

We took a winter road trip with my parents. We spent the first night in Washington DC where it was cold, I just checked it was 33F.

This was the days of Canadians not requiring passports to enter the States. My, how things have changed.

This was the year of  the "Canadian Caper",the popular name given to the joint covert rescue by the Canadian government and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of six American diplomats who had evaded capture during the seizure of the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran, and taking of embassy personnel as hostages by Islamist students and militants on November 4, 1979.

The "caper" involved CIA agents (Tony Mendez and a man known as "Julio") joining the six diplomats to form a fake film crew made up of six Canadians, one Irishman and one Latin American who were finishing scouting for an appropriate location to shoot a scene for the nominal science-fiction film Argo. The ruse was carried off on the morning of Sunday, January 27, 1980, at the Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. The eight Americans successfully boarded a Swissair flight to Zürich and escaped Iran.

Americans were grateful for Canadian efforts to rescue American diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis.

We benefited during this trip with many perks like tickets to Disney at Canadian dollar entrance prices.

We snapped a few photos the next day as we left DC.

Driving through South Carolina we are entertained by the billboards for South of the Border.

We went to Disney Magic Kingdom.

More Vegas Opulance

January 2017 - Las Vegas NV

We walked some of the Strip last week. This week we'll cover a few more casinos and sights.

This time we'll head south on the Strip.

We'll start at Harrah's and cross Las Vegas Blvd, where we stopped last week.

There are mobile billboards everywhere.

We take the pedestrian bridge from Treasure Island into Fashion Show.
The mall spans 1,888,151 sq ft (175,415.0 m2) of space, with more than 250 stores and seven anchors, and hosts weekend fashion shows on a retractable runway with the mall's central atrium, hence the name.

We'll cross over to Wynn.

The US$2.7-billion resort is named after casino developer Steve Wynn and is the flagship property of Wynn Resorts Limited. The resort covers 215 acres (87 ha). It is located at the northeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sands Avenue, directly across The Strip from the Fashion Show Mall.

The 614-foot (187 m)-high hotel has 49 floors, with the 2,716 rooms ranging in size from 640 sq ft (59 m2) to villas at 7,000 sq ft (650 m2). The complex also includes a 111,000 sq ft (10,300 m2) casino, a convention center with 223,000 sq ft (20,700 m2) of space and 76,000 sq ft (7,100 m2) of retail space. Together with the adjacent Encore, the entire Wynn resort complex has a total of 4,750 rooms, making it the world's seventh-largest hotel

Here's a photo from our condo of both hotels, on the left.

The water dances to old Rat Pack songs.

Inside there are upscale shops.

The carousel is permanent. The carousel is 13 feet tall, 16 feet wide and weighs 6,000 pounds.

They add Chinese New Year decorations at this time of year.

The hot air balloon is also permanent. It is 20 feet tall and weighs 4,000 pounds.

John steps outside to the main entrance.

Back outside and looking across at Fashion Show.

Heading back and looking towards Treasure Island.

We're approaching Venetian and look back towards Treasure Island.

Across the street towards Mirage.

Back to our shuttle at Harrah's.
