Tuesday Treasures

Tom hosts Tuesday's Treasures.

September 2015 - Ireland

Since it is St. Patrick's Day this week I thought I would take us to Ireland, Bunratty Folk Park and Castle. We've been here several times, I first went in 1970 with my parents!! It is a tourist destination that we go to when we are travelling with someone who hasn't been. It is very well laid out and the old buildings are a delight.

They also host dinners in the evenings which we have attended in the past and are a lot of fun.

Bunratty (Irish: Bun na Raite, meaning "End of the Raite river)
The first settlement in Bunratty may have been set up by Vikings in the 10th century. The Annals of the Four Masters report that Brian Boru destroyed a Viking settlement in the area in 977.

Around 1250 the Anglo-Norman ruler Mucegros was given the right to hold a market and fair at Bunratty. He built the castle in 1277.

So I guess it qualifies for a Tuesday Treasure!!

It was restored in 1954 to its former medieval splendor and now contains mainly 15th and 16th century furnishings, tapestries, and works of art which capture the mood of those times.

Golden Vale Farmhouse .. home of a farmer from the rich lands in the Golden Vale of Limerick and Tipperary Counties.

The Weaver’s Shed .. a wooden outbuilding for housing the loom of the weaver.

Child of Prague every Irish house must have one, my mother even brought hers from Ireland.
