Sepia Saturday

Sepia Saturday

Dublin Ireland

The topic photo immediately brought this photo to mind.

These are my maternal great grandparents Catherine and William Brennan.

This is a copy of the 1911 census so I am guessing that this photo was taken in 1911 or 1912.

The children are Mary V, my grandmother who was always called Veronica or Vonnie. And my grand uncle Alex.
They would add to the family, William, known as Billy B and Catherine known as Kate.

  1. Photographic poses were so different back then!

  2. I can't imagine having to stand or sit still for so long to get a photograph taken. I imagine the little ones for fidgety, just like they are today. What a great photograph of your great grandparents!

  3. The mother in the photo looks so interested and attentive. The little ones' dresses are beautiful, especially the one with the lace around the bottom. Do you know when the photo was taken or if it was a special occasion?

It's interesting -- unusual, I think -- that the census asks for religion.

  4. I think this is a conversation bench where 2 people sit sort of back to back but side to side as well. I can't imagine a photography studio wanting to pose people that way in such a chair.

  5. Oh but your photo is far more charming than the prompt image.

  6. I love the backdrop. Very unusual to see a ship deck. Wonder if they were planning a trip?

They look more alive, and friendlier too...
